NSOLA7 is a facility that abducts young women and turns them into androids for commercial use. It looks specifically for girls who have desirable physical appearances and who won't be missed by nosy relatives or influencial figures. The process effectively involves extensive cybernetic/robotic replacement and personality subversion. It then boxes them up and ships them out for sale as fashion models, sexbots, and civilian sector units. Units that aren't quite up to code get repurposed into Operbots or Slashers (security units), by having their heads/arms/feet replaced, giving some appropriate body horror. It's made very clear that as a whole, the HD units are *not* treated well, and for the most part the staff treats them as objects to be used. You also learn that the staff are ridiculously unstable in general, with one of medical staff basically running a drug ring out of his office and getting into a lengthy shootout with security culminating in his death.
HD512 is a unit that appeared to have a malfunction - a learning difficulty. The head engineer of NSOLA7 took an interest in her, and, over time, discovered that this stemmed from the fact that she had developed an isolated cognitive loop. In addition to preventing her from generally expressing emotion, it also is heavily suggested to be gradually pushing towards giving her self-awareness. Strauss, the head engineer, becomes obsessed with this, and in his studies, gradually takes a shining to HD512. He makes the argument that her existing loop suggests that this can happen in units NSOLA7 has already shipped, meaning a potential disaster if one of NSOLA7's sold units develops similar loops at the wrong time.
At the same time, it's heavily suggested that NSOLA7's been targeted by an outside force, likely a competing company, and there has been issues with security response and outright sabotage of NSOLA7 equipment, culminating in a shuttle crash.
Over time, Strauss' obsession leads to him treating HD512 quite well, and staff starts to get suspicious. At some point, Strauss gives HD512 a haircut (possibly at her request). This gets Strauss disciplined. He winds up getting into a fight with security but is let off with a warning since he's critical project staff. Realizing that HD512 could potentially be scrapped, Strauss helps her escape, and in so doing, gets caught. Security tries to interrogate him, suspecting he's the security leak mentioned earlier, but it doesn't go well and they beat him to death. HD512 is eventually subdued and returned to engineering for analysis and possible repurposing.
The NSOLA7 staff have problems in Stauss' absence, since he was a much better engineer than all of them, and most of the new-gen units failed migration checks. Some of Strauss' co-workers do further research and discover that Strauss was absolutely right - HD512's loop exists, and similar loops have been detected in other units. With the younger engineers having to pick up the pace, the bulk of NSOLA7 is effectively waiting on shipments. And then, a disaster happens.
At some point, an explosive device is planted in NSOLA7's Entropy Anchor, its main power plant. The explosive breaches the cooling lines and leaks toxic substances, and the Auxillary Core is absolutely trashed. The resulting overload causes a massive radiation leak known as an Entropic Flash, and the bulk of the base is subjected to an overpowering dose of this corrosive energy that begins to mutate large numbers of staff into the Clicker enemies you see in most areas. The base quickly goes to hell and shuts down entirely. It's heavily suggested that this explosive was the work of the aforementioned third party trying to deal with NSOLA7.
Everyone human dies or undergoes Entromutation. The base goes dark. Emergency protocols activate, and HD512 is awoken from stasis, and attempts to escape the facility, and the game begins.
The gas might be a neurotoxin (referencing Portal). The Creepers are failed Haydees turned into sentry bots, and part of that process is replacing the head by a robotic one, probably removing the brain and making them pure AI. That would explain why they aren't affected by the gas.
So are they sex dolls/robots or actual human beings? After reading this, sounds like they are just regular humans, with some mechanical appendages at best.
They then use machines to remove the personality, memories and of the woman and replace whatever was in her brain with the sex doll programming. If this procedure fails irreparably for some reason then off to conversion where they remove the head and arms for the conversion into a slashy.
So HDs are human sex dolls, Slashy's were human but are now essentially robot zombie sex dolls.
