Audio doesn't usually work when you start the game
Start the game and get complete silence. SteamVR has all its usual noises. Sometimes closing the game and starting it again causes it to work. Sometimes restarting SteamVR causes it to work. Really frustrating.

never ever post any of your system stats or someone might be able to help...

seriously... could be literally everything without knowing what you use. WMR headset on a 10 year old pc maybe? :conwayshrug:

without any info, it is impossible to help. remember that for the rest of your life. js

Thanks for this suggestion. I'll give this a try next time.

Since you like condescending tips so much i'll give you one back. Treat people nicer and you'll get better outcomes.

Not all software problems need hardware specs to resolve. This is going to be one of them because of the binary nature of it "works sometimes and not others in quick succession". The program is stable when it works which makes the hardware specs unlikely to be relevant. The symptoms align much closer to a software related problem.

The other suggestion above aligns more with the symptoms with it being a windows level issue. The idea that windows may not play sound because of program window focus on the desktop does track as quite likely.

I had also considered whether the game was selecting an audio device itself and choosing something that isn't producing audible sound like another device that's off, or my monitor which is detected as an audio device but has no actual speakers. I had no way to really test that.

still nothing about the hard- or software you use. are you attached by cable or wireless? do you use steam link? :conwayshrug:

good luck.

Still it always helps getting more information about which headset is used, what are the specs and especially which way you're playing. Especially when coming to Quest it is always helpful if someone is using SteamLink, AirLink, Cable or VD.

So if the sound is available when you have the window in the foreground, then this is "solved" in terms of "this is expected behaviour from the current build", but can still be treated as a suggestion like "make it work if it is in the background".

If the problem is not solved with having the window in the background, then more stats and the way you play is pretty important.

I agree. I haven't had time to test this yet. Won't get a chance until tomorrow. Its a cabled PSVR2 through the official adaptor. Different headsets didn't resolve the problem (used the direct one through the headset and a separate wireless headset)

I've done some other troubleshooting that was dead ends, which is why i'm so confident its a software specific solution. The window focus issue is quite testable, as i could likely replicate the issue and replicate solving it. I'll add the outcome back into this thread and mark it as solved when that occurs.
I have the same problem. No sound at all! Restart takes no effect. I have a Meta Quest 3 and using Virtual Desktop, no cable on VR Headset. Hope this will be fixed soon. In the demo i had sound. Cheers

Go to desktop via HMD if you wish and be sure the game is the main-screen and infront of any other screens.
I have found a solution. When I start the game in SteamVR then the audio is working fine. But when I start the game in Virtual Desktop directly (like I use to do with other games) then the audio fails in the game. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the extra data points. In my case i've only started the game through SteamVR, i've never once started it via virtual desktop. I will add that i did have to mess around on virtual desktop before starting the game a few times. In a few hours i'll have a chance to try mine again.
Can now confirm that the window focus is the exact cause of the audio issue. Was able to reproduce it and then fix it by clicking on the window as suggested.

You're welcome)
i solved this by opening through steamvr home instead of through VD

My issue was that i was using VD to do some other stuff and then opened the game through Steam VR, something about that caused it not to work. So going into VD while it was running and simply clicking on the game to bring it to focus solves it.
