What the "Super Machine Civilisation" mentioned in the April Fools description actually means.

As some of you be aware of, one of the new (backer exclusive) ships added to this game is the R-9uso800 APRIL FOOLS. In it's description, it mentions that it incorporates technology from a "Super Machine Civilisation". Most people more familiar with the lore had assumed that this is referencing the Other Civilisation from R-Type Tactics II.
However, I've recently learned of a special Playstation Home event from back in 2013 that centers around an alien invasion by the Kikai Machine Empire. Granzella seemed to be involved with it. Here's a video:

There are some very clear similarities between the skull designs on the Kikai soldiers and those that appear on the APRIL FOOLS. They also make use of red alot.

So in all likelihood, this isn't some deep lore thing and is more just a little in-joke/reference.

Why not both? We never get an explanation for who or what the extra faction in Tactics 2 is, so the devs making a reference out of it works fine without actually braking any canon.

Too be fair, the Other Civilisation is more beige/yellow in colour, not black and red.
Also, there's not a skull in sight.

Hmm, I might have been thinking of the Solar Envoy, which also has no explanation, prays on both humans and bydo, and is black and red. Now I'm starting to wonder how many factions actually exist in the R-Type verse, and why all of them seem to be hostile to each other.

And then there's the alien race from Image fight...
