They are just too eager to overbid that its just a false difficulty.
The hardest part of hard mode, is not punch something when the NPC keep out bitting you at the last second repeatedly and when you get several auctions in a row where the game wants you to loose money or walk away, the game is not fun there its just frustrating.
I have a formula that I use when bidding in hard mode which is starting bid, rounded to the nearest 10, times 6, once it past that number I walk away, have not lost on a won auction since doing that.
