That said, the game is fantastic and loaded with things to do like quests and side activities with a bunch of NPCs and such. Usually indie titles don't have this much to do so I'd say this game stands out.
Other Zelda 2 clones I liked are Elliott Quest and Chronicles of Teddy.
>2d RPG quests (open world not metroidvania).
How exactly do you have a 2D Open world? I don't know what this even means.
Also popful mail but I didn't get to far in it.
Sounds like a good game I loved zelda2. Was way better than I thought it'd be given it's reputation. But a lot of the games in good series people say are bad I usually liked a lot.
Oh, this is your term for a Metroid clone? Okay. You don't have to call them "Metroidvania." I stick with just Metroid clone since that's the series that invented the design...Castlevania borrowed it just like anyone else. That said, this is not a Metroid clone as the maps are more simplistic (but are sometimes maze-like) but are more straight-forward. Zelda 2 is definitely a better comparison.

It really wasn't disliked when it came out...that's just a rep it got years later when kids went back and played it. The game was huge when it came out. I played the hell out of it. And, like I said, try out Elliott Quest and Chronicles of Teddy if you want more games like Zelda 2. There's not a lot out there. There's also a game called Infernax which is more of a "Castlevania 2 clone" but that game was similar to Zelda 2 but without the overworld map.
So yeah, in a sense, Phoenotopia has progression system somewhat like Zelda II, but also with contents (e.g. puzzles and collectibles) on par with modern day Zelda games!
I like the game so much that I started helping around, somehow even became a moderator here heh
But yeah, as a fan of all 2D Zelda games myself, I would say Phoenotopia is really a good game with many things to like. Even if the combat may turn certain people off, I would still recommend at least giving the game (or the demo) a try with difficulty turned down.
Edit: I actually find the combat the be at the right level of difficulty & complexity myself - Neither too trivial like button mashing, nor too distracting from the fun puzzles. It's just that I heard not everyone is fond of it, so I want to give a heads-up. But perhaps you'll actually like it as much as I do, who knows!
