How do I save a game?

Sorry I know this may sound stupid but I've been playing the Wild West dlc and I thought the game had been saved. I went back on tonight to find I was back to the start of the dlc. Can anyone explain how to save and load games please? What am I doing wrong?

When you exit a room, your progress for that room is reset / lost and there's no way to save it (there's also no autosave feature at the moment).
