From the Official FAQ thread:

How many players can play in multiplayer?
For multiplayer, we recommend 2-3 players for the best experience, even though you can play with up to 10 players!

And as far a I know, the game was tested for up to 17 players.

The game would be pointlessly easy and would ruin the experience in my opinion. I played with my partner and even then you can be off doing your own puzzle each and miss out on some of the content, as well as them be carrying a clue on their person you haven't seen or mentioned. I think 2 is a good number 4 would be way too easy and fighting over the interactions on the map

Playing through it with 5 of us, and it's kindof crowded. But we manage. Probably best with 3-4 max.
