What I also love about Starsector is that you control your flagship, but the rest of the fleet is piloted by the AI, which has different levels of aggressiveness, depending on the temperament of the npc captain you put on a ship.

Only game I really played like that was Naval War: Arctic Circle (been ditched by the devs I think) but there are plenty more like that, I believe 'Harpoon' was the original back in the day. More up to date you are probably looking at things like 'Command: Modern Air Naval Operations' but that might be a bit hardcore.
Possibly some of the WW2 carrier games might scratch the same itch too.
Again, this is purely for the gravity thrusting type combat side.

People constantly were asking - what is similar game like darkest dungeon - there were none, all were much inferior.
What are similar games to FTL - there are none, all are extreme cheap copies with nothing to add.
What is similar game like subnautica - ya right, zero games are like it.
tl;dr Same with this game - you can find some low quality game that might have 1thing you like and 10things you wont.
