What do I do if I run out of fuel?
The fuel range circle lied to me and got shorter in-flight (I think because of damaged ships?) and I am out of fuel literally 20 miles from a city. The local defense fleet and cargo ship has radioed in my position, is there any way I can get fuel or am I just screwed?

Happened to me as well, from what I know your only option is to fight whoever comes after you and take their fuel.

You need a tanker ship like the skylark, a liberated town nearby, then you split the skylark off with just enough gas to reach it (use the knob before the split to pick the fuel % you want), fill to max at the town and return, and hope its enough.

Certain allies may be able to help you get to a "safe town", this saved me once when my liberated towns had SG's looking for me and I was running on fumes! Had to do the tanker shuttle to get enough gas to make it!

It is also possible you have lost. Plan better next run and take fuel seriously, I plan everything around it.

It's weird how the game has no code built in to tell if you're in a literally unwinnable situation or if you're just... stuck.
Happened to me too a few times. Still don't know the cause.

Taking off and landing consumes fuel. You always want to have a fuel efficient tanker, such as a skylark, that can double back for more fuel.
Ahhh late to this one, if you have other ships you can buy a mockingbird and modify it with fuel tanks, fill her up, then fly it to the downed ship and tug it to the closest city. :)
