I started out playing stealthed and all that happened is I would survive the whole match while others died and then die as the last victim. Have abandoned it in favour of playing more action focused and it's much better. You'd be surprised what you can get done even with Bubba revving his chainsaw right at your back.
I mean, jumping down the well is certainly the easiest and most universal way to escape. It's functionally a guaranteed escape at the cost of health and going back to the basement. All the other means are a lot trickier and more situational. Against the Family that aren't Sissy/Hitchhiker it's definitely possible in certain areas to put a lot of distance between you and potentially lose them through wall cracks or crawlspaces... but these are situational, as most will just buy you a bit of breathing space as the Family member loops around. Leatherface Barricades are probably the safest way to escape that isn't a well... no Family member can follow you over them and they almost always massively screw with the Family member's ability to pursue... as long as you aren't being double-teamed, obviously. If you're being double-teamed in a coordinated fashion than essentially everything goes out the window and you probably need to jump down the well.
You can also buy yourself quite a bit of time, enough to potentially escape, by initiating a Bone Shard clash with a high-Strength character, or juking them enough to shank them in the back with a high-Strength character, or a good Leland shoulder-check if he's leveled up to put them down for a longer period of time.
