I'm actually quite curious.
I think it has something to do with survivor strengh and the killer savagery, and also who can tap the button the fastes? Just my guesse's

Good and solid question and hopefully someone can actually be certain on the answer.

its a mashing game,
60% bias towards victim I believe. but family member does appear to do progressive damage if they start getting the upper hand.

I think it also depends on your health if your health is below 40% I think the victim loses. But I'm not sure.

It's not actually a win/lose game. Both players have an invisible struggle meter they're filling up. If the family member fills theirs up first, the victim starts taking damage. You know this has happened because the family member starts hurting the victim. The victim just needs to fill their meter before the damage they take kills them.

You should probably mention strength(from victims at least) does have an effect on this. A Leland will "win" much faster than a Connie. There's also a perk that increases the effectiveness on the victim side.

This is true, I finally got the 'Git back here' achievement yesterday and I noticed everytime I won a close encounter as a family member, the victims were already close to death before the struggle.

Well definitely how fast you press. Since I put it on a macro it ends way faster in my favor.

Also I think health. Most of my lost encoutners were at low health, but of course it could be coincidence as I also lost at full health. Could be macros on their end when I wasn't using it.

It's like opening a lock from Victim side. However in this case the bar is filling from both sides.
