This is nothing new. I don't play Killing Floor for the characters. It's like in the bottom five of things that aesthetically matter in the game. But more power to you if this is where you draw the line. It just seems kind of dishonest and like looking for reasons to feel bad about the game before it even comes out.
I actually had a whole post comparing the characters, but since you're addressing the OP's post specifically about looks, I'll just say that the KF2 characters were based on their occupations or personality, while KF3's characters are generic because they're part of a military group.
In KF2, you could choose between a modern soldier, a WWII soldier, a guy/girl in business artire, a punk rock chick, a biker, a reverend, etc.
In KF3, your only truly distinct options are Mr Foster and the Ninja. The other characters just don't stand out.
Sure, people in a military group look generic ala indistiguishable from any other shooter with military people, agreed. But people dressing up for their occupation are also generic as white wall in an office. Same with characters dressed up as societal expected biker or punk rock chic or dj. Kf2 character design is not as unique and game defining as people make it out to be and for that to be a complaint point is pretty surface level and disingenuous lol.
Bit of a shift in goal posts.
We agree that the characters look like a generic cast of mil personnel.
We agree that the characters could represent their class in their design, that they dont is just bad design. But again KF2 didnt do that either they are just a collection of character models put in a zombie killing game and given flavor text.
All im saying is when it comes to the complaint about the KF3 characters, they could be anyone. Just like how "they could be anyone" was the same look in KF2.
Ana aesthetically might look like a badass (agreed) but put her on the coverart of KF2 and she looks like another edgy rock chick killing zombies. Swap that same cover on Dead Island or Rising Dead or Walking Dead or Project Zomboid or 7DTD or L4D3 or L4D2 or B4B and shes just another indistinguishable white lady killing zombies.
Again though I agree Trip didnt really work all that hard on making their Heros for their Hero Shooter memorable, stand out, distinguishable or unique. I just dont think its that big a complaint point and i think series aesthetics goes far beyond character design.
They are def going to milk the ever lasting piss out of the cosmetics though. Would not at all be surprised if there were UE hair assets taken straight from a library dragged and dropped into Tiers 6 12 18 and 24.
