Im soooo happy someone else is having these issues because I thought it was just me. I can’t fully enjoy the game because I have no clue how to access the phone, option, and build mode. Sometimes I randomly navigate to it—other times I do not and just close the game:). I just take breaks and hope that when I return days later things will magically work :/.
We have partial controller support, you will sometimes open UI that require you to use a virtual mouse instead of traditional controls like A to select. Opening the crafting UI is an example of using the virtual mouse, the hotkeys to use the mouse appear at the bottom of the screen.
Controlling the virtual mouse is the following:
Right stick: Move mouse
Left Trigger: Left Click
Right Trigger: Right Click
Left Stick: Scroll
As Squirrelet has mentioned, you can improve this experience by using the right trackpad as a mouse and press is left click which will work with every UI.
To access the phone/build mode, a key shows up in the top left, this is the SELECT key (next to the left joystick), let me know if you have further issues with this key.
Over the next few months we will be improving every UI to have full native controller support and hopefully transition out of partial controller support so everyone will have a more intuitive experience on controller.
Sorry to hear you are having problems, lets try to work through these issues.
In character creation, to deselect an item you need to press A again to turn it off, these are for optional categories like facial hair or makeup.
To interact with objects you walk next to it and it shows a green outline for you to press A to open the wheel. Once the wheel is shown, you hold the left joystick in a direction then press A to select the node. Could you clarify what you mean by you cant interact with anything?
For things like opening the fridge, you can click A to move items between inventories or hold A to pickup item and drag it to any slot. Press X to move 1 and hold X to pickup 1.
Could it be you are having problems with the A key in general, sounds like in each case you provided they all required to use A. Make sure you have the recommended gamepad layout and are not on the keyboard/mouse layout.
We don't have a setting that inverts the mouse, could you double check your control settings on steam doesn't have this option turned on?
Let me know if you have further issues.
Part of the problem is that very, very often the item you want to interact with won't highlight for you to be *able* to click on it. The recycle machine is particularly bad for this. Those of us on Steam Deck can at least use the trackpad. I have no idea how you'd play with just a controller.
Thank you for your insight, some world objects are missing the required interaction support which will be addressed in the coming days, this includes fixing the crush machine. I hope you don't have issues with the inventory UI itself, like moving/using items, feedback is appreciated.
I really had been hoping it would work right out of the box. I see the developer commenting they are working on it, I really hope it gets fixed (with regular steam controls A for selecting etc). I bought this as soon as it was released, & I don’t normally do that, was really hoping for smooth gameplay.
Sorry you are experiencing these issues, we are trying to fix as many issues as we can and thank you for your patience. When you have to double click everything, are you talking about the virtual mouse (like in the crafting UI) or is this EVERYTHING, even in the main menu? We understand touchscreen or fiddling with controls isn't really ideal for everyone so working on full controller support is very high priority.
