I bought this on launch, played a bit on and off and was impressed when it launched but decided not to get too into it and wait for release. Started it up again today and it's come a long way from what I can see. Mind you, I only played the skirmish/survival mode and not the campaign.
These kind of games are supposed to be tough and require a certain amount of min/maxing to survive which is where the fun is supposed to lie. They Are Billions really didn't draw me in with it's campaign although I really enjoyed the survival mode.
The game is good from what I can see, I don't see the reason for the hate but my time is limited admittedly.
Bug fixes, path finding issues, units unresponsive/stuck, badly needed new units/defenses/buildings, linear gameplay, factions feel the same but with the Order getting the best units, performance issues, useless parts of the skill tree, survival mode QoL, rogues still bad, music stopped playing, occasional crashes, etc etc - most of which could've been dealt with through the years but instead they used their limited time on a mediocre campaign.
I don't understand why would they not focus on the very thing both games got famous for - Survival mode, and instead went for the same mistake Numantia did.
The devs are now too quiet, their community managers suddenly disappeared at one point. Discord is kinda dead now with just 3-4 of the same people posting memes. They've banned one person already for just speaking out negatively about the future plans. I'm not surprised with the mixed reviews.
I've enjoyed playing after release in EA and haven't play much since then. The issues people have had were balance issues after a content update which is normal for EA games but most folks ignore the EA tag and assume it should work perfect and whine and leave. I don't play campaign mode on this or TaB but survival or skirmish I love and works well for me. This has more options then TaB and soon co-op mode as well.
Campaign was fine- worked as a tutorial for me to get me back into it and tbh would probably be the best purpose for a game like this. (highlight unit strenght,s enemy weaknesses, faction uniques etc.) to the let players test themselves in survival.
Getting better at survival now too, and am about to try my hand at horrific.
I kinda agree with the sentiment of spend more time developing assets for survival over campaign but I do like having a story for the heroes being used.
However, clearly they are doing more balance with recent rouge/pikemen changes and adding more units. I'm hoping they will add blessing that allow more melee strats in death nights (most likely a building that improves survivability when nearby) or blessings that give a buff to them.
I remember the time when the devs were so active and passionate. Same with the community. Things will quiet down again soon until multiplayer arrives.
I think that's a lore thing. We have a low magic scenario overall where most of the known magic goes back to a race that has become near extinct generations ago.
I personally like it, because it makes the game feel a little more unique concept wise, because they actively decided to work around certain common fantasy medieval archetypes.
I would at least like one more ranged hero, 1/6 isn't much of a choice.
Also, we have magic demons, crystals popping out of the ground, and magic flame bubbles but no mages because lore. I do like the king Arthur aspect about this game but it would be nice to have a magic mode option for those of us who like to see fire works
