Game feels very slow, time comparism?
I'm returning to this game after a long break, to find that it feels much more slow than I remember.

Playing on Survival, a day (from dawn to dusk in play) seems to take 9 minutes or so.

And the figures seem to be moving more slowly.

It feels almost as if I'm playing at 50% or 66% normal speed.

Is this normal? Has it slowed down recently? Or am I imagining things?

Is there a speed setting for the game anywhere?

Hey there! Welcome back to Age of Darkness, It's great to have returning players. Regarding the game feeling slower, we haven’t made any recent changes to the overall game speed in Survival mode. A day lasting around 9 minutes sounds about right for the current build.

However, there are a few things you might want to check:

— Double-check if you’ve accidentally toggled any settings that might affect the game speed. Unfortunately, we don’t have a speed setting per se, but sometimes different graphics settings can impact perceived performance.

— If your system is running other resource-intensive applications in the background, it could affect how smoothly the game runs.

— Since you've been away, there might have been updates that subtly changed gameplay dynamics. Check the patch notes for any changes that might affect game pacing.

If you still feel like something’s off, it could be helpful to verify the game files via (Steam > Library > Age of Darkness: Final Stand > click the gear icon on the right-hand side > Properties > Installed Files > Verify Integrity of Files) to ensure everything’s up-to-date and running smoothly. And of course, feel free to share any further details or concerns here if you'd like a team member to take over; we're always here to help!

There is midgame and lategame slowdown introduced by one of the patches midway through the game's lifespan.

The cause is units spazzing in place. Any time you load your save, any tight unit balls you have will begin spinning around trying to pathfind, even if they have no move command issued. Every second you let this go on, some slowdown is added to the game, which only goes away if you quit and restart.

What you need to do is immediately after loading, select all your unit balls and issue them some kind of move command, even if it's just a few steps away. Most importantly do this with any units you have just chilling by your barracks and siege workshops, since if those units are left unattended they'll just spazz and spazz.

Spazzing only happens on load. You don't have to issue move commands to your freshly produced units in the middle of a play session.
