Also worth noting, as the game doesn't explain this well, that unlit areas during a death night have the fog which shows the path of a hoard using the brightly lit lighting within the fog. Watchtowers only work on areas of the map that are explored (and lit?). Generally I build death night defences as close to the Crystal as possible and find that most Crystals have an obvious path so a Watchtower isn't needed. I use watchtowers when a branching path for a crystal isn't clear, or when I think two crystals might bunch together at some point. Not entirely sure why the limit of two though, I tend to build one to find a path and if there's another path that I'm not sure about I just destroy one and build it somewhere else.
