Well not really, the problem is with todays gaming that we starting to lack of originality. And at least indie games is saving it by bringing something new. And not like big gaming companies, cooking same stuff over and over again playing low risk. spending on marketing and increasing the hype to sell fast.
You know how those big gaming companies usually get that big?
By taking concepts and ideas from other games, and refining them into something they call their own. Aka their first big hit.
♥♥♥♥ only gets bad after they released multiple lackluster sequals to those games.
TAB is a good example of a game that is good, but could REALLY benefit from slight adjustments.
AoD might or might not do better than TAB, but it's clearly trying to build on the "genre" TAB established. And that by itself isn't a bad idea, it certainly beats the originality of most games released on Steam.
I personally thought that way of researching was already bad in TAB but ok, here we go again.
Beyond that, it has a few twists to the mechanics you know from TAB that make it more interesting and mix it up a bit fresher.
For example, Darkness and in that sense Fog of War is your contamination.
So, similar to how the Zeds spread when they overrun a building, Darkness works bit differently but mimicks the same idea.
I think the graphics are better and the setting is far more interesting.
The AI and pathfinding is minorly better, still jank though.
What comes on top is a hero and unit upgrades.
Pretty basic and they really should get more experimental and wild with that, but it adds something.
The Blessings are similar to the Mayor Upgrades in TAB, although bound to your progression on waves, not population.
However, they are much more interesting than TAB, where you often only get a building for free or a bunch of units.
Its still just number tweaking and stats increase, but it does more.
If thats not enough, then i fear its not different enough to it.
HOWEVER, see it this way.
When TAB came out in its closed Alpha (not Early Access) and even a few months later, it was basically as far content wise as Age of Darkness is now.
With the difference that Age of Darkness is a lot more polished and well working than TAB back then, which didnt even have a way to change difficulty, nor allow saving options.
Age of Darkness even has Mutators so you can tweak your difficulty to your liking.
IF Age of Darkness receives the content shown on the roadmap, then it will end up vastly superior.
Admittedly, thats not hard to achieve, TAB barely received any love from its developer and falls behind its potential.
But the multiplayer alone (hopefully coop) will make Age of Darkness truly stand out.
If they also manage to add some more interesting things on top to the roadmap, it is absolutely well worth to be picked up.
And believe me, im sceptical as well. Right now its def. fun and good enough to provide a dozen+ hours playtime.
If you like TAB, then i think this will give you a really good game with some fresh air.
Not too much to be overly different, but enough to not feel totally samey.
I fail to see how the AI is "vastly superior". Its just a swarm pushing your base iin both games.
When i played it the first time in closed alpha the pathfinding was completely broken and bad. Amateurishly bad.
So bad it could have been programmed by me. It lacked even the simplest definitions and conditions, like "if obstacle pick closest alternative path around".
Instead units just ran into an obstacle so long until they glided around it.
To name one example.
In that sense, Age of Darkness AI/Pathfinding is "vastly superior".
But TAB also sets the lowest bar in the entire industry when it comes to that, so pretty much any game is vastly superior in that regard.
Its still super jank, just not horrible.
I dont mind that the games are similair, but this is COMPLETLY the same, same tacticts, same mechanics, same way you build your city, same level up system, even the same map design, and even similair "cocky" lines from your troops when you move them around, and the AI does the same - searches the fastes way to the main building. They literally stole every part of TAB and just made it with different textures.
edit: was/is
The problem with today's gaming is that people not owning a game just think they know everything about it and feel free to share their ignorant wisdom
Yes they are same as genre and they are billions started this genre base building zombie defense which showed us that its fun and good game. Even they took the idea i hope for this game they will do better with the campaign, because they are billions screwed it over and project is finish. I remember there was ideas about coop but they said we cant do it because of sync and other stuff, sorry if cant remember correctly what there argument was.
Some from my side if they will spend time on those things what they are billions didint want to do or was lazy. And if they manage to listen to community and maybe even pull off a coop game, this game might even beat TAB.
Lets just hope that devs wont let it go and make it better than TAB. So than we can say its like TAB, but big BUT it's much better.
Feel free to argument and discuss, i will join in when i have free time.
They are Billions is actually nothing original at all, let alone starting a genre (the genre is simply "city building").
It basically took Anno City Building Economy (area of effect) and typical wave defense from 3 decades ago.
Games like this exist since the very first Command and Conquer at the very least.
And no, im not just talking about the Ant Level.
In Warcraft 3 you also had plenty of those maps and modes as well, in Starcraft 1 even an official wave defense game with economy building.
Starcraft 2 turned it into a full coop mode.
See, theres plenty of those games out there. They just differ slightly.
TAB was just one of the first making it a full game.
And honestly, considering that they had plenty of inspiration to take from other games, not even a good one mechanically.
