Resuming chapters or save points

Hi all,
I bought the game to play with my kid, and of course I am very bad at using the keyboard to move around, so they clearly divorced me after 3 hours :P
This said I have a few questions: if we stop before the end of the chapter, can we resume from the checkpoint or should we always restart the chapter? I ask because I was totally unable to move past a combination and they helped me, but after realinzing how hard it was with keyboard, they plugged their usb controller on my pc (we game on two separate pc). After that the "controller disconnected press A" was stuck and there was nothing I could do to use again the keyboard and I had to leave the game. When we restarted we were again at the beginning of chapter. I am not even sure I restarted properly.
Second question, is it possible to get just one screen and not the split screen? Not sure they will try again to play with me, but just in case.
