Do both player need to have a copy?

nah, just one of you need full game .. other one needs just download Friend´s Pass version and you invite them from your full game menu

But it is kinda problematic that you can only invite a friend via Friend's Pass when they have an EA account as well, rather than just only having a Steam account (since the online is based on EA servers rather than Steam)
