How to play with friend's pass without Origin?

The documentation around this feature is annoyingly vague. I was under the impression that one person downloads the friend's pass, the other (owner of the game), launches their copy and then the option to play together is there. But it seems like it ignores this altogether and asks for "friend invite" - and that friend invite goes through Origin's systems anyway.

In other words, it doesn't matter if I am a friend with someone on Steam - the game ignores it and looks for friends on Origin. Is that correct?

Yes. Both players require origin

The only way that can happen is with remote play. Online, however, still requires both players to have an origin account.
