Yes it can be played online without remote play, but there is no matchmaking. Or it can be played in remote play/parsec.

And the friend pass allows someone who doesn't own the game to join a game of someone who DOES own the game. A little bit like a free copy. That way only one person needs to buy the game in a group of two.
