Rejoin feature absent?

I just made myself look like a dunce after asking someone who was bugged to disconnect and reconnect. They paused the game and left, and never returned. Everyone was confused, and to prove a point I left as well. However, the rejoin feature wasn't there. Only after clicking the "play" (or whatever button it is) did I get the option of "rejoin" and even then it was for a fraction of a second as it put me in a different and brand new match.

Anyone having the same issue?

Reconnect is only when the game crashes, or you close the game entirely.
If you "disconnect" you leave the match.
To reconnect you need to be out of the match somehow but without having intentionally left it.

Would a force close work? I know they have a suicide / unstuck button but its kind of out of the way
