What the Hell Am I Doing In This Game?
I played Awesomenauts a lot when it was still a thing (been a while though), so I know a bit about MOBAs. Never played League or any other kind.

But I have no clue what I'm doing here.

Why are there like a thousand things I need to keep track of? Why does the shop require me to stare at it for 10 minutes comparing everything and doing math? Do I need to be a genius to play this or read 100 guides?

I pick what I think is the best for my character and the moment, step out and then VERY quickly to a Greytalon or a Mo and Krill or a Kelvin. It looks like I need to pick the ABSOLUTE MOST optimal things every single time or I'm basically throwing and we lose.

I thought I could just learn as I play, do the tutorials, read the stuff in the shop, but it looks like you can't learn like that. I have no idea what's going on, no idea what I'm supposed to do that would be optimal, no idea how I'm supposed to play this.
Am I supposed to stay in the lane the whole time, farming the enemy "creep"s and fending off the enemy players? Or am I supposed to go around farming the random monsters, flanking around to surprise the enemy?

It's very unintuitive, you're expected to just know. My teammates are running around all over the place doing things and I have no real idea what they're doing. I'll try and follow them and then they rush off to some other location and I'm not sure if I should follow them or stay where I am.
Whenever I step out of the lane to look around for stuff, someone catches me out there and obliterates me in a second.
Nobody says anything other than basic stuff like "go mid" or "guys, go farm" or "kelvin left".

Super overwhelming with the large amount of things thrown in my face immediately.

Am I too stupid to play this game? Is this only a game for people that came from League? Should I just quit now because I don't have the knowledge from that?

Practice vs bots.
Watch a short youtube videos that explains the basics.
Play a few matches.

You know... learn to play?

The game makes most sense if you have experience from League or Dawngate, tbh. Playing with an experienced player that doesn't have the same attitude as that guy would help, a lot!
If watching videos or whatever isn't your style I'll help you out

The more you play the quicker you will be in shops.

This is an invite only playtest, it's not really designed to be intuitive for casual players at the moment. If you want to improve at the game, you will most likely need to watch YouTube guides on the soul mechanics, follow builds while you are learning the items and continue playing regularly. You aren't just magically going to walk into the game and be good at it when the most relevant experience you have is in an extremely casual MOBA you apparently haven't played in a very long time. Many players are terrible at the game when they first start, you are not alone and I can guarantee you will improve quickly if you do the things I've mentioned above. The majority do not and you will find yourself leapfrogging them very quickly.

Yeah idk I think I'm just too stupid to play this. Every time I'm there I'm a colossal detriment to my team, and if they're in voice they are very irritated with me because I suck so bad.
I literally can't win a 1v1 against anyone. Anyone.
I get obliterated by Mo and Krill literally every single time they're on screen no matter how much I try and get away or kill them.

I'm not rushing in and being an idiot, I'm trying to play smart and safe and only "going in" if I think I can kill them. But no tactic I try works. Playing aggressively gets me killed, playing cowardly has them chase me down and gets me killed, playing a mix of the two has them go in and I get killed, playing sneaky and trying to get a flank and surprise them does nothing, they turn around and I get killed.

I think "oh my character does better at close range" so I'll get close and then get absolutely decked and lose half my health in one melee power attack and then die in 1 second.

I'll have picked all the things that increase my damage, thinking I'll do very good left click damage now, and then someone runs up shooting their shotgun like 100 rounds a second and I die faster than I can even react.

I'll think "oh I have a teleport, I can shift three times and I'm pretty fast, I should be able to get away from most people".
No. I can't. Not even close. I use every movement ability and they catch up to me immediately and obliterate me in an instant.

Every scenario has an enemy slaughtering me in like 1 second while I do tickle damage to them even when I spam everything at them.

I never feel like I'm helping, more distracting and being a detriment to my team and letting them down.
In both matches I've played, like 30 minutes in I only have around 1-2 kills and 9-12 deaths. It's BAD. Far worse than anyone else on my team.

I don't know what the matchmaker is but it is NOT putting me with and against other brand new players. It also seems like the enemy team is always communicating very well and mine is not at all. We'll go in and fight the mid boss, kill it, and then as the "rejuveninator is descending" they ALL rush in, spam their ults, kill us all in a second and take it.

I think this is a game for people with min-maxing in their blood, who enjoy doing math, don't mind looking at 100 videos of "10 best builds for Paradox" and reading hundreds of paragraphs of guides and can memorize it all perfectly, and play in groups where they communicate VERY well.
I'm playing solo.
I don't think I can play this, I don't think this game WANTS me to play it. I think this game is trying very hard to tell me "you are not welcome here, you are not our people, get out".
This doesn't feel like a video game to me, it feels like a job, and matches are like 45 minutes long, and from what I know if you have the audacity to leave you get a very hefty and long punishment that's possibly a permanent record on your account, so I also have to worry that my power will go out or Comcast will have some hiccup and I'll get on to a 12 hour ban or something.

Idk man you've only played 4 hours, that is not alot of time to improve and "git gud" as some would say. I've played over 500 hours now and I feel like im still ♥♥♥♥ sometimes.

Everyone has bad games.
Borko Dec 30, 2024 @ 6:41pm
Played another match. My third one.
I picked Yamato. Thought her abilities looked very good.

I'm solo lane against Mo and Krill. I literally have no chance right off the bat. I do kill them twice but then they upgrade and obliterate me, push to the guardian and blow it up in one go.
Now I have no lane and I have to go all over the place because teammates never stay put.

I try and pick solo fights but I literally can't kill anyone. They all effortlessly evade me, or juke me and then turn around and come back and obliterate me in 2 seconds while my abilities, again, do tickle damage. I'll use EVERY ability Yamato has then start blasting them with left click and power melee attacks and I don't even get a Pocket to half health. Everyone has TONS of health and is VERY evasive.

Everyone does TONS of damage. Like INSANE damage. Pocket shoots me four times very fast and I'm 25% health and have no chance of escape.

I really apparently do NEED to min-max and get the most optimal at ALL times, but HOW? Do I farm? Do I kill players? What the actual hell do I do? What am I supposed to do?
My teammates are pissed at me, some guy in voice calls me trash.
WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO??

Also again, enemy team is coordinating perfectly and NOBODY on mine is. Everyone wants to play lonewolf, and they keep getting destroyed over and over and over to groups of three who go around hunting players. I try to group up but they ALWAYS run off without me, it's like they're allergic to me and don't want me anywhere near.
I get someone kind of low, they run off, I chase, they 100% call for help for their teammates who then get there FAST and then obliterate me in a second.

I try and go in for a kill and they kill me instead in A SINGLE SECOND. LITERALLY. ONE SECOND.
It's like everyone is the most op thing I've ever seen in any video game and I'm an annoying fly that gets crushed instantly with a fly swatter. I am literally 100% useless.

I'll be going around farming the bots, turning around to make sure nobody is there, and even still out of absolutely nowhere, out comes Mo and Krill, Seven and Abrams and they stomp me into the dirt in a single second and I have NO IDEA where they came from because I was trying to pay attention.
I also can't hear them? I don't know why I can never hear anyone coming up to me, my headphones are fine and I can hear stuff in other games, just not this.

I am extremely close to quitting and never looking back. This is the most unintuitive game I have ever played in my entire life and it makes me feel like absolute pure and utter garbage. It makes me feel like I'm the worst most useless gamer on the entire planet. I'm the worst on my team EVERY match.

Here, look at this: https://imgur.com/a/A6INMtX
That's me EVERY match.

I don't think I'll ever be good at this no matter how many hours I put in because I don't have a min-maxxing, mathematical brain. I hate math. I want to play a video game, I don't want to spend hundreds of hours reading guides and learning this like it's rocket science. I feel so ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stupid.

Update: Started my fourth. Solo lane again and I'm immediately diffed hard by someone who clearly knows exactly what they're doing. It's a loss already.
I'm being put in matches with and against people that have hundreds of hours.

I actually just quit that lane entirely because I literally can't do anything. I just gave up on it, there was no chance in hell I was holding that person off no matter what I did.
Left to go help some teammates out in a fight. Launched over and slashed the hell out of someone and then they immediately killed me, a teammate walked over, stared at my body and said "you need to find somehow to stay alive".
Wow thank you very helpful! /s
No matter what things I buy I still die immediately.

You are late on the ship.
The best time to on board is September and October. When there were thousands of newbie, we played and learned. Now, the casual players have left, the mm just cannot find other 11 players like you.

This game is not newcomers friendly, it is overwhelming complicated. You will need atleast 50h just to learn the movement and its items.

I am afraid so. I love this game, but this is the truth. You need to watch alot of youtube gameplay, read change logs, read build and how to counter heros with both your hero skills and items. You need to learn the counter items to your counter items. Its passive and active effect. Some counter like debuff need to be active at exactly time.

Or you need to go to discord, find some people like you in your region and play together. The game is in alpha, it does change alot and frequently. It is not healthy for casual player.

Because there are no new players. Again, this game is an invite-only playtest. It does not have masses of new players downloading and trying the game every day. Most of the people left at this point are people who have been here for a while, genuinely love the game and want to see it improve. There are still plenty of bad players, and you can get to their skill level or higher if you put the effort in, but it will take effort and the mentality to deal with bad games.

Considering you started complaining about your experience just one or two games in, you clearly do not have that mentality. There's nothing wrong with that, but recognising this now will save you a lot of time and energy trying to enjoy something that is not for you. Wait until the game releases and there are more like-minded players and casual-friendly content to help you. I believe you and many other new players struggling with this game in its current state will be able to enjoy it if you come back at the right time.

Wow thank you for this very unique advice, it sure did help me. Since reading this I have been winning every game and am now a master at all characters.

You should keep playing though unless you just don't like the game. The more hours you put in the more comfortable you will be with a character and builds you can do.
