If you have a very high damage character (Haze, Shiv, Infernus, "all-in-on-Kudzu" Ivy, etc.), then you can usually drop your AOE or hose down early jungle camps to clear them in seconds. If lanes are pushed out, then you can safely rotate through them.
If your lanes are pushed in, then defending your base is a good idea both for soul farming and protecting objectives; if enemy players are poking at the chokepoints instead of committing to a potential endgame push, then they usually can't deny all the orbs from you killing the 20 minions massed up at your gates.
Don't be afraid to avoid early teamfights that wouldn't secure a game-ending objective push; your teammates might whine about it, but pushing 3 lanes up to the Walkers is worth more than the life of the overcommitting Seven player.
