If Return Fire didnt stop you from dying instantly, then Haze was likely already farmed past you. The best way to counter Haze is to be as strong as her, which plenty of Carries can do, and then get the counter items like Metal Skin, Return Fire, Curse, Warp Stone, etc. She is a Hyper Carry, so she will outpace and outheal your damage if you dont have enough money. But if she cant get farm and keeps getting shut down, she can be pretty useless outside setting up other Heroes using her Sleep Dagger.

Take her farm, dont let her solo your weakest team members, farm the enemy jungle, engage her strategically. Bait out Ult (she cant speed up how fast she moves during it, so once youre out, youre usually safe) and then engage from there. She has almost no spirit damage, so Bullet Resist and Metal Skin and Disarm render her inert.

Dont get me wrong, its not an easy thing to do. its hard to think about actively countering someone as opposed to passively (actively meaning going out of your way to play differently and try to shut her down, vs passive where you just buy counter items and play your own game). It takes coordination too, coordination I dont always have myself.

Side note, this is what works with the strong Hazes I go up against in my groups higher MMR, but its not the top MMR, so I cant speak to that

Return fire is good only at the first half of the game where her damage isn't that high. After that, you best just sell it. To me, the thing that works best is Knockdown and Metal Skin. Considering the playerbase rn mostly focus on damage-oriented build, more often than not, they can't counter Knockdown. But if they do have anti-cc item, I find Metal Skin to be really good to counter her. Mostly focus on tank and survivability build if you really want to hard counter her, because as a Haze player, those can make me struggle in a 1v1.

If you want to focus on CC ability/item as a mean to counter her, make sure they don't have anti-CC item like Unstoppable because a good player will wait on you to burn all your CC options.
