Ah yeah, my assists have been far better compared to kills, nothing to scream about but im usually around the 6-8 mark for them.
You've spent time away from a fairly young game (in terms of when people actually had their hands on the game), so now even average players kind of know how the game works while you've not quite figured it out yet.
It's telling of your mindset that K/D is your performance metric of choice. 'Objective damage' and 'Player damage' are arguably more valuable metrics for contribution to victory than 'Kills', and that's something you'd only get to understand through knowing the game better.
Basically, you just need to play more, and when you do, play more towards destroying the map objectives (guardians, walkers, shrines, and ultimately the Patron) than towards getting a high kill count. This isn't a Call of Duty Deathmatch, but you're forgiven for thinking it is, because it probably felt like that a month or so ago.
