How to improve Afterburn build up?

I've been enjoying playing as Infernus as my 2nd choice character using a build focused on Afterburn, especially DPS on it and receiving healing from that damage. One problem I have though is getting Afterburn to activate on an opponent. Using the in-game menus in Sandbox mode, I think I always need to hit 11 shots for Afterburn to activate. I didn't find any upgrades that improve the build up per shot, but I would be very grateful if you know any.

Are there any other tips for getting Afterburn to activate? Increased fire rate or bullet damage? Should I mostly flank instead of directly assaulting enemies so I can get closer? Thank you in advance.

Fire rate is always a popular choice for Infernus for this reason, magazine size too. The burn counts as mystic damage so I would focus less on weapon damage and more on mystic damage. I think duration also works to keep them burning longer.

Headshots increase buildup as well as buying the item that increases damage fall-off range, as buildup is slightly dependent on damage.

Once they're ignited, any damage refreshes the timer so falloff isn't as important.

But yeah, it's easier to go fire-rate and spray, especially with Ricochet.
