I hate roofs!
The implementation of roofs is so terrible. How are you supposed to build roofs and banners? The wall to make roofs takes up the entire walkway. It looks ridiculous. Who thought this idea up? It's like trying to build out of Duplo Legos

I do love the game overall it was just as addictive for me as They Are Billions. The roofs seem like an addon and not elegant. If they only gave minor buff that would be OK but in rain you miss 4 times out of 5, This is way too much of a handicap and it just takes foever to build ugly roofs just to be able to hit anything. Also it seems odd that 2 combined blocks are cheaper than two of one block. This leads to a kinda tetris to try to use 2 length blocks and again needlessly slows the game down. Unless theres some other reason to change the cost?

I dont mind the roofs. I think the rain is too punishing tho.

We're aware that rain lowering accuracy might be a tad too punishing, and are thinking ways of improving the weather system while keeping a certain level of challenge. Any ideas?

Making roof construction easier should allow you to keep the rain debuff punishing maintaining challenge without being frustrating.

Perhaps adding "Wood Pillar" piece ( 4 thin wood pillars on each corner per square which should be aesthetically ok if mass built next to each other ) that only supports roof / additional pillars with limit ( or whatever small items the devs think its balanced ) and be pathed through by 1 square unit.

For reference[h7.alamy.com]

Also please reduce the banners size or allow it to clip through certain roof piece

Looks bad aesthetically wise

Also perhaps making rain only affects units at certain height from the ground should make exploration combat less frustrating

It took a lot of headscratching before I realized that the way to use roofs seems to be with windows topped by the two-tile overhanging roof. Some sort of tutorial on how you're expected to build with roofs would be helpful.

Maybe just decrease the accuracy penalty? Or you could just lower the damage output of each unit (rain makes it hard to see or aim at weak spots?) which is much better than missing consecutive shots and doing 0 damage in my opinion. Just some input, dont pull out your torches :er_heart:

In """rts games""" with few individually controlled units and low ranges (more properly low avg range over avg speed) like this i'd avoid using any precision mechanic as it becomes unreliable and therefore frustrating to play with (like in cases where a breach is close and you really need to kill the enemies, which in other circumstances would be just about targeting the right thing but since precision is a thing then the breach itself might be a dice roll more than player skill).
There might be cases where it can function, like high attack speed or multihit attacks (dots for example), but for the slow attacks of the units in the demo i'd suggest instead going for an attack speed reduction.

On roofs i don't think they are a bad idea, just that constructing them is annoying, as they lack the optimization you can pursue with other wall assets but keep their requirement in term of "stuff that goes around".

Welcome to the club. I'm also hate roof and not only that one which protects from the rain.

About the issue : maybe we can have more / wider roof tile variety? Like, for example, "Г" shaped roof peace (like already existing wooden plank), then 2x2 square roof peace with 1 support point (like wooden plank from tutorial), maybe even 2x2 roof tile with 2 support points and only 1 is required.
We absolutely need 3x2 roof tile with 2 required support points.

Also, did you know that normal wooden planks work as roof too? Well, now you know.

On top of that you can place 3 cubes tall stone column, then place wall-banner and then on top of it wood/plank extentions to make a roof.

Also, @DigitalMallen if you planning to change accuracy penalty, maybe you can make it stack over time (while under rain) and add pity mechanic where each missed shot stacks "chanse to miss reduction".

Roofs are just annoying yes, they need supports, supports block units from standing, leading to ridiculous structure formations.

Yes make roofs only a partial support requirement structure just like real roofs, i shouldn't need to block off my entire shooting area just to stop rain.

Changing the penalty to reduced damage would feel a lot less terrible than chance to miss since there would be no bad luck streaks where units just miss their attacks an absurd amount of times in a row.
dodgytactics 20 JUL 2024 a las 20:49
just as a "pro tip" for anyone struggling with roofs in skirmish you can build a wall add windows to the top and then 2 roof pieces with "support" (the larger one with the flat bit) to create a walled roof behind the stone wall you just made, then make whatever configuration of wooden platforms with want.

I will add though non movement blocking wood pillars or something similar would be nice, ALSO the miss rate on rain is way too high right now had six units miss a single 10 hp unit something like 20 times in a row.

one sugestion id like to make with how to change is maybe make it a stacking debuff? so short excursions are easy enough but the farther/longer out your units go the worse the debuff gets up to its current maximum? otherwise im super excited for this game!

in rain maps you should never engage without roof unless its like 2-3 stragglers on the expansion areas...

Because there is pretty much no height limit, roofs are not problem...
what i do is
1. fire arrow thing
2. to stone slabs next to it, each having one of those flag things hanging to give buff
3. wooden structure on top of those stone columns to give you roof

you get all the buffs, none of the debuffs and your units just grind them effortlessly.

The main problem, is how much the rain debuffs the units in my opinion.
