However though while it may be similar I can safely say I haven't ever seen these types of models before. The style actually makes me think of games with more darker art styles but not without cartoony elements. Games such as Don't Starve and Darkest Dungeon come to mind. It feels very "storybook" esq with the "illustration" styled graphics.
The games' very clearly not just an asset flip with slight changes and the models and look of everything is quite polished, but I do see where you're coming from. But, I mean hey, if it plays well I can forgive it even if it looks like somethin' on a NES. Gameplay above all.
Plus from what I've played on the demo, it's like a smaller scale They Are Billions (in terms of armies) with a lot more custom elements to buildings. As somebody who grew up with LEGO and is now a LEGO collector, that's just awesome.
The style does somewhat leave something to be desired, but I'll support the game & pick it up regardless because from what I've played, it's great! Plus I want to see more singleplayer focused horde/PvE based RTS. I'm a bit burnt out on so many RTS being multiplayer focused.
P.S. Of course the dude with TAB profile picture compares it to TAB
Not to seem rude or anything, I just found it funny. Gotta have some variety and experimentation in life. Every new strategy game gets compared to TAB, which I completely understand cause that game was super rad but not every dev/studio has the resources to make a TAB clone.
You are just overly fed with high contrasted ultrafast AAA DA, so when someone present to you piece of art you aren't able to understand it.
It's like food, if you taste a 2/3 star michelin just after a Big Mac full of industrial sauce saturating all your taste capacity Of course you will find this a joke or a scam, but maybe keep it to you next time?
And sorry their is not step by step process to get out of your bulimic journey, this is an internal path for every body, so...

Honestly, I can't believe this came from the guys that made Moonlighter. Color palette is correct, art style is a balance of macabre and clean, and the audio is a huge step up, but gameplay wise, this feels like a much more concentrated and well designed product. Moonlighter was... okay, but had weird design choices. This is a massive step up. It's like if Over the Garden Wall was mixed with Stand Still, Stay Silent and layered over They Are Billions. Everything has been on point, and the level of creativity it gives to the player within the confines of "Defend this building, get resources, and don't die" is simply impressive. I can't wait for the release.
Thanks for appreciating all the work we're putting into Cataclismo. We're definitely more mature and experienced as a studio, and I believe it shows. The easiest route would have been to keep doing pixel art action games, but we wanted to demonstrate what we're capable of, pivoting genres and art styles while still providing a quality game.
You made our day :3
And now we got this, and I guess there's some other similar kind of games out there aswell or coming soonish. Good times.
Saying that I think the dev for this game has chose the right art style. It looks and feels natural for the type of game.
