This is a remake of Monster World IV. It doesn't really count as a metroidvania because the level design is linear, but it's pretty close otherwise.

Is this like monsterboy or the dragon's trap where you turn into different stuff for different powers ?

No. But in this game you have a partner who fulfills that role

ah i see so it does have special abilities and skills but not quite a metroidvania, tad disappointed.

If it's a remake of the genesis game that never got released in the west, you unlock upgrades to your pet that give you more navigation options, and allows you to progress in the game. You can also buy items and find upgrades of all kinds, It's definitely a metroidvania if it's really the same basic idea as the genesis version.

Although wonderboy in monster world is by far the best game in the entire series. Maybe they're leaving the best to remake last, hopefully :p

In this remake you can go back to completed levels so it does feel even more like a metroidvania than ever before... Still can't just walk back out of them though. You need to use your magic lamp to fly back to town.

It's way too linear for me to consider it a metroidvania, especially when you never have to revisit old areas with new abilities to make progress, which is like... the entire focus of the genre?

There is no game called Wonder Boy IV. This is a remake of Monster World IV. There are 2 games that say Wonder Boy III in some regional version of the cover, though. Monster World IV would be the 6th Wonder Boy game. It was the last Wonder Boy game of the 16-bit era.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land = Monster World I
Wonder Boy III The Dragon's Trap = Monster World II
Wonder Boy in Monster World (AKA Wonder Boy V) = Monster World III
Wonder Boy Asha in Monster World (this game) = Monster World IV

There's plenty of Metroidvanias that do Zelda-like dungeons you never really have to go back to, so no.
I would like to see a remaster of Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair or Wonder Boy in Monster World. But being realistic the most likely thing is that the next thing we see will be Wonder Boy in Monster Land or Monster Boy 2

It's not just dungeons, there's no finding ways to progress through previously blocked off areas with new abilities in the entire game.
What "plenty of metroidvanias" are you talking about, anyway?

There's keys, switches, and puzzles, though. It definitely has a non-linear level design. I think that's really what makes a Metroidvania, the level design.

The Moster World Wonder Boy games, Monster Boy, most of the Shantae series, Simon's Quest, Portait of Ruin, and even Metroid Fusion are all Metroidvanias with closed off dungeons or areas you never have to go back after completing.

The other Monster World games (except the first one) and Monster Boy are chock-full of areas that need to be revisited to uncover secrets or ways to progress. They're some of the finest examples of what Cheese is talking about.

I haven't played the other games you listed so I can't say about those.

It's linear but for what i have played now, the level design has more to show than Dragons Trap (who is very cool too)
The 2 games are good but different except the level design of Dragons Trap is very flat (can't blame, it's a game who was released in 1989 in master system/game gear and others (if im not wrong on the date) but still a nice little game.
Asha in Monster World is very enjoyable and very vertical, a lot of traps and cool stuff and you have still some exploration to do to get items (not very hard but its something).
I think this one is interesting especially if you want to get 100% of the stuff.

But yeah you have Monster Boy too but it's recent xd (a gem and it's metroidvania style)
Play just all of them :)
(except the first one to me, not fan of the style)
