It takes quite some time just leave your shop open they will eventually make a mess for you to clean up but you need traffic coming in and out

This was definitely easier before they removed loitering from closed shops. You could just go adventure for a bit and there would be footprints waiting when you got back. Now it requires you to have a lot of foot traffic actually moving through an open shop and making sales.

If you are progressing from the prologue to the island map and are experiencing issues with getting dirty footprints on the Pop-Pop shop plot territory, more footprints should appear on save/load.

So we have to do the prologue to get the footprints? I was having the issue without going through that function.

No, you do not have to do the prologue to get footprints. We have found some people going from the prologue to the island have had some issues with getting enough footprints/mess/dirtiness, but it is fixed by a save/load. If you loaded into the island, there should be no issue getting footprints or dirt or messes.
