Don't work on too many islands at once until you've learned how things work or you'll suffer from attrition and slow progress.

Research monster farming so you'll know what to do when you're ready.

Never use diamonds to speed things up - just wait and hoard your diamonds early on. They are not easy to acquire.

Never pay full price for dipsters - try to wait for sales when they cost 1 key each.

SPIN and play the memory game each day to get free currencies. Login each day at least for a moment to get the higher login bonuses (ex - day ten gives 25 diamonds!).

Eventually "Mini-Mine" structures will be available for 10 diamonds, to create one diamond per day each. Put one on each island you can as quickly as possible. It'll pay off big time in the long run.

Skip unnecessary stuff (costumes, most decorations) at first. EXCEPT for when you view the LIKES of each monster to make them happy.

Whenever a monster gets to level 15, you can visit Gold Island and copy it there (not all monsters, I believe - not sure). Try to get all monsters to level 10 at least so they earn you coins quickly.

Remove a couple obstacles (trees, rocks) each day. That clears space and gives you XP points (for raising your level - upper left corner of the screen).

When Wishing Torches become available (level 12?), place at least 6 on only one or two islands that you want to focus on, then promote your friend code on this forum so others can light your torches and you can light theirs. (My friend code is 4002213413BB). That helps breed rarer monsters.

Drop your friend code wherever you post here. (Use the Friends Menu - your code is in the upper right corner).

DO NOT join a tribe until you know how they work, and have a good way to farm the shards you'll need to really help a tribe.

If you're into composing, note that a new song costs 25 diamonds, then 50 diamonds, then 100 diamonds, etc. So plan out what you want to do there carefully in advance. It's really fun, but expensive! However, the monsters on that island are pretty inexpensive.

The Colossingum doesn't do much for you, but training monsters costs little. So train one every day or two to prepare for when you do want to explore that island more.

If the music is important to you, realize that which monsters you have, their position on the island (left or right pans their sound left or right), the MUTE button for each monster, and each monster's volume control on the MOVE menu lets you tailor the song to sound as you wish. Also, after you upgrade castles you'll start to get a bass synth sound from them.

Most important of all, use the Friends menu to visit as many other peoples' islands as possible, upvote islands you like, and light their torches when you can. That will earn you Star Power (the blue stars). That will also show you what is possible and help you plan what you want to achieve or avoid. Otherwise you'll be running blind until you reach level 20 or so. For example, I don't like those giant robots at all (Wubbox?), so I'm sorry I wasted time working toward those for a while.

Watch some YouTube tutorials. Not that they are all great, but they'll help you get a feel for things you can't see until you're at a much higher level. Knowledge is power!

Have fun. MSM is a really cute and fun game!

You forgot to mention the one on Plant Island is not 10 diamonds, it's 500,000 coins.

Also..

Only if you dont care if your ingame friends are actually people you know or not.
Which, if you dont, it's totally worth it.

This made me realize how bad I truly am at msm.
On EVERY save file I always get every island as soon as possible
I literally have no farms in any save files unless you count my toe jammer army on mirror plant as a farm
I have never done the memory game in my life unless I'm looking for teasers
I decorate every single one of my islands regardless of progress (albeit not for likes)
I used to not care about monster position though Project Awakening's pyro aqua changed that
The only youtube tutorials I've watched are breeding guides
Also I never light my friends torches past lvl 20 or so. (I wish there was a way to unfriend ppl because I would tell everybody to unfriend me rn)
Everything else I do though so uhh...

Yeah, I had MSM on mobile first as well, so I had no idea how much you could do with it until I got it here.

Thanks to Yellow and TruckmanGabe for the additions and corrections. I'm only at level 21, so don't take what I say as gospel. But that's what I would have done from the beginning if I could do it over again, up to level 21 at least.

I just made this guide that I posted in the discussion tab because I forgot the guide tab existed. All of this has probably already been said under this post, but I thought some of it might help.

Feed Your Monsters
Higher level monsters make more coins and have a higher chance of breeding rarer monsters. This creates a positive feedback loop; the more coins you have, the more food you can make, the more you can level up your monsters.

Spend Diamonds Wisely
Diamonds are best spent on getting the bonus Breeding Structures and Nurseries in the shop, and upgrading those structures. The first thing you should spend your diamonds on is getting a mini-mine on every island. This guarantees a constant diamond income if you log in every day. Unfortunately, the bonus Breeding Structures and Nurseries are only available once you spend real money on the game. All of this is not to say that speeding things up is useless; you will likely need many attempts to breed certain monsters, many of which are only available for a limited time. A particularly good way to increase your diamond income early-game is to buy every island and place a mini-mine on each island. With a mini-mine on every island, you will be earning around 15 diamonds a day.

Make Lots of Friends
Friends can light your wishing torches which increases your chances of breeding rarer monsters. You can add people as friends if you have their friend code. People often post their friend codes in the "Connect with Friends + Join a Tribe!" pinned discussion. Be sure to light all of your friends' torches, too.

Only Buy Currency During Sales
The heading is pretty much self-explanatory. This game often has currency sales, and it's simply not worth it to buy in-game currency at full price.

Werdo and Dipster Sales
Occasionally, Werdos and/or Dipsters will be on sale (Werdos for 50 relics instead of 100, and Dipsters for 1 key instead of the usual more than one key, depending on the island).
I recommend to only buy Werdos when they're on sale, same with Dipsters. It's simply more cost-effective and efficient.

This is my first Steam guide, any advice or constructive criticism in the comments would be much appreciated. If anyone else has tips, feel free to leave them in the comments.

Lets say theres a scenario where theres an ethereal breeding bonanza and you have a monster you have been desiring for ages in your nursery, and another THAT CANT BE ZAPPED in the breeding structure. The breeding bonanza ends in less than an hour, but your out of beds and and upgrade needs more than an hour to upgrade and you dont have the diamonds to speed it up. You dont wanna sell that wubbox you've been saving for now, do you? Heres what you do. Buy a hotel, and put said monster in the hotel, begin incubating the egg in the breeding structure, breed the ethereal,(tho you might not get it because of how rare they are but assuming you do) put the ethereal in the nursery, wait for the castle to get done... pull out the wubbox and the ethereal, and your done. Hope this overcomplicated thing helped

I'm feeling pretty silly at the moment, having just realized this only at level 22. But when you are playing the Memory Game or Scratch ticket, it MATTERS which island you're on when the game launches! I kept wondering why sometimes the Memory game had all these crazy unusual monsters I knew nothing about (making it difficult to memorize them). I also hated the scratch ticket because it only gave me yet another Noggin or Potbelly. Then I realized that if I run Memory Game from Plant Island, you get only the familiar monsters found there, making it much easier to play. So I tried running the Scratch Ticket from Psychic Island, and wham, I won a red hot Kayna! Everything makes sense now!

<- Knew about the island mattering for those already and is on lvl 22 aswell. Also knows a very sus way to "reroll" the Scratch ticket, however the monster you get on one island is predetermined and stays the same always. Changes for any island you use the scratch ticket for, though. Also is exclusive to mobile. Oh yeah, did i mention i only play on mobile? i just have a alt account here on steam that's nto been touched in forever.

That reminds me of a similar little tidbit. When you get a free monster (say, a Rare Potbelly from the Cold Island Conundrum), you don't HAVE to hatch it on the island you received it on. You can get a Rare Potbelly from the Cold Island Conundrum and hatch it on Psychic Island, Earth Island, or any other island with potbelly on it. I figured this out after I reconsidered if I really wanted a forth Rare Potbelly on Cold Island.
