Are torches now required for rares and epics?

I used to be able to breed rares and possibly epics with no torches. I have tried 20 times on Plant Island to breed Rare Fwog with no torches but all I get are regular Fwogs. On the first try on 2 islands with 10 torches for Epic Hoola I was successful. Have the rules changed for rares and epics? Has anyone been able to breed rares and epics with no torches during this event?

yeah they are not required but its kinda hard to breed them without lighted torches but you can still get lucky

I finally managed to get the Rare Fwog on Plant Island on the 26th try. It should NOT be that difficult to get a two-element rare. It's not supposed to make a difference but I changed the breeding order to Noggin and Toe Jammer after 20 failed attempts using Toe Jammer and Noggin. Got it on the 6th try.

And I got Rare Quarrister, Rare Deedge (2x), Epic Deedge, Rare Tring, Epic Hoola, Epic PomPom, Epic Stogg, Rare Fwog (3x) this weekend (no speed-ups used for any)... best event, ever :-P

I haven't gotten a rare or epic anything despite repeated trying. Worst event ever!

I tried breeding 20 noggins in one sitting with 6 torches, didn't get a single epic.

I have gotten 8 epics so far, but I started with the lowest breeding times (Noggins, Mammott, Toe Jammer) and got most of them from the first tries on friday, and on fully-lit islands. And on 4 islands I use 2 breeding stations. They are really more rare than "rares" I think.

PS: Also, the ingame help says it helps if the monsters are higher level (I mostly breed with level 12-16s). It is still unclear if using rares helps with chances, however, if I have a rare I am using that instead of the normal, it can not hurt the least.
The most help are definitly torches so please all consider lighting your friend's torches, at least during events when they need it most!!

I have 2 thoughts on this...
1) Yes, lower times means you can fit more tries per event... BUT
2) If lower-timed monsters take just as long to breed as longer-timed monsters and payout is not comparable to time required to breed many more times, then lower monsters are way too expensive to breed...

I agree. I stopped trying and went back to breeding normal monsters. MUCH more rewarding!

ADDED: Out of 83 tries of low to high monsters and 0 to 10 torches lit I only got 1 Epic Oaktopus. Very much a waste of my game time! I will think long and hard before trying epics again!

Well yes, you need more tries, just that I wanted to get the frequent login-ones (especially Maws which you get for breeding fails on noggins every 22mins -.-) over with asap and while torches are lit.
I also agree that it sucks if they are that rare, however, well, I have nothing much else to do in the game anymore so I just give it a shot during events.

PS: Also I will repeat that tipp from the other thread for everyone: You can save-up all your torches - means, leave friend-icons hanging - and use them only when needed. So at least on the first day of events you have a head-start.
Edit: Just got epic #9, again on the only island which was fully lit, because I logged out on it during the night.

I'm thinking the same thing, that these events are a waste of time, last event I got 1, this event so far 0, and that is also with 0 to 10 torches lit, if torches actually help I have yet to see any solid proof of that.

I mean I get that the epic's and rare's should be hard to get, but not to the point that it's damn near impossible, it just sucks the fun right out of having an event.

I can't complain.

Well, I do really want that halo for new monsters back, so I know that there's one going with that combo when the one on the other Breeding structure is done and I wonder whether to try again or a different one.

And I want that stupid

clicking delay sucking all joy out of getting a new monster GONE!

But as far as success goes, I'm fine. Got Epic Bowgard, Maw, and Furcorn (I think, it's in Nursery) on Cold Island, and no idea what's cooking in the Breeding structures (see above), for example.
