A drill constantly chases you in this game...
And I'm out. Love Shovel Knight but that is one game mechanic I CANNOT enjoy for the life of me. I hate being forced to be in a rush all the time in any game...really hope they make that optional in the future.

I've spent 300 hours with a game that has a time race mechanic, its called Spelunky, a beloved game with a lot of love. Trust me, it can be done well. This shouldn't be the deal breaker that it is for you.

Well this one is from the get go and you can't relax ever apparently. Dude who was describing it even says he's a fan of Spelunky and that this was not fun whatsoever. Honestly I'll watch some videos when it comes out but...sounds like a deal breaker for me.

I’m more concerned about the fact that the description says you unlock permanent upgrades for the character. This sort of mechanic ruins the whole point of it being a roguelike for me. It may as well just been a standard platformer by that point. (And no, I didn’t like Rogue Legacy, either, for the same reason.) If you are going to make unlockables, please do it like Isaac and Gungeon, where they largely go towards new stuff to find in later runs rather than making later runs easier.

For me, the gameplay of rogue legacy was a little too stiff and specific, not necessarily the concepts itself. I'll be cautiously optimistic about the game's timer mechanic. It could be something that causes too much anxiety. I'm sorry if I'm wrong about it.

I have no issues with it being timed. (In fact I myself made a roguelike where the whole gimmick is that you have 20 minutes to beat it. You can extend the timer by exploring and finding clocks, though, so it often becomes more like 25-30 minutes.)

The timer is pretty generous. It'll only show up if you're like, hanging around one spot for thirty seconds and you get warnings like rubble falling from above. Even when it appears (it more resembles a clumsy pizza slicer) it's extremely slow.

I say all this as someone who agrees wholly with OP. I hated the feeling of being rushed in Spelunky. If a level sprawls out and wants me to explore, I don't want to be put under any kind of pressure. This game however is more arcadey and you pretty much are going only one direction -- down. You won't be hanging out in any one place very long esp. since you can't go back up.

The timer as such more exists to save people from the frustration of trying to get every last gem than a monkey banging cymbals telling you to hurry up. Roguelikes with no pressure whatsoever like Dungeons of Dredmor tend to drag on for obsessive-compulsive players who will otherwise try to milk every level of every last resource.

Having an accessibility-option to set the spawn time would still be a welcome add in my opinion. It could only add to the enjoyment of players without taking anything away from those who want to keep the timer.

I "beat" the game (there's still plenty more to do), and I didn't even notice there was a saw blade thing until a few zones in. The timer is pretty generous. You can get rid of it by going into a side-room, too.

I'd agree, it *would* be a great accessibility option. Which is why the game already has it in its Accessibility options :D

We must be playing different patch versions then, because mine certainly does not.

Ach you're right I was thinking of game speed. For some reason I could've sworn I saw "spawn time".

I'd agree that'd be a good accessibility option though because not everyone CAN rush even with the generous timer.

I love spelunky , the 2nd one is amaaaaazing.
but a lot of people hated playing it for the same reason
time racing mechanics aint for everyone, just gotta accept that.

Yup, it's a matter of taste. I'm someone who likes to stop and appreciate every bit of background art and scrutinizing every pixel. Rushing mechanics tend to work against that desire.

EDIT: Just wanted to mention I saw an achievement for breaking the stupid thing. (The Omega Saw)

I don't love forced timers either, but the saw is pretty slow, and you won't even see it most of the time unless you just stand there. Going into side rooms (of which there are plenty) pushes the saw back in case it is getting close. I've died to the saw once (on my first run).

Thanks everyone for commenting. That doesn’t sound all that bad compared to what I heard about it prior!
