I'll never understand this weird fetishization some people have of japanese voice actors. I understand personal preferences and all, but some people make them out to be like, the best voice acting in the world. Much of the time I'm not impressed with them, and don't see the big deal. That being said, I'm not a big fan of the typical japanese style of voice acting.
Because in Japan voice acting is a huge deal its literally a career choice that is at the same level as being a movie actor /singer/idol hell some of them do all of those at the same time , the amount of effort/talent required to be a one is tremendous and even with all of that you're replaced as soon as you get "too many roles" some voice actors/resses are forced to stop voice acting for a year or two sometimes just so they don't get over hired thats the level of professionalism we are talking about , now when it comes to English Vas ? all you need is a big twitter account / YouTube channel / or someone you know in the industry and you're set for a long career (not saying the Eng Vas aren't good but they are mediocrely low compared to the Japanese ones) .
I'm skeptical that any anime in Japan is held in the same regard as an Akira Kurosawa classic. I've seen numerous people say that anime in japan is regarded a nerdy hobby and isn't really a part of mainstream adult culture there.
Regardless, even if voice acting is a bigger deal there, that doesn't make it objectively better. Japan has its own style of voice acting, and not everyone is going to like that style, or think it sounds good. The male voice actors will often try too hard to sound macho/manly, whereas the female voice actors will have voices that sound overly cute and high pitched. Even in slice of life stuff. It doesn't sound realistic, and they're obviously putting on voices a lot of the time in a way that doesn't sound natural. But a lot of anime fans like this stuff because that's what they're used to.
Well in the end its subjective to everyone , I might have held the same opinion as you in 2014 but after I gave a couple of animes a try it changed my perspective regarding voice acting in general , at first it did sound overkill with overly cute girly voices and the macho males but somehow got used to it and started enjoying it a lot .
For me its not that, I am fine with a english dub if the voice fits the characters, but from what I seen in the trailer and how cringe some of it was, i'd prob have to mute the voices to enjoy this. I usually play most jrpgs with the english voices unless they are REALLY bad.
Imo the problem of the women is even bigger in English voice acting when it comes to games and anime translations. I have the same problem with this game: Every woman and girl except for Tomoe sound extremely cutesy, far more than they should in most cases. Imo the only people that should have these cute voices are Aoi because she's very timid and Momo because she's a little girl. I only found the voice acting of Tomoe extremely cringe, but i don't know if the way Gyaru-women talk in Japan could be translated to this way, so I can't have a good opinion on that.
Can't say I agree. I've seen a good number of dubbed anime, and its common for the female characters the have normal or in some cases deep voices. There are some cases where they might try to imitate the way the japanese voices sound, but not often.
But we're not going to agree on this, so there's nothing else to say here.
It's like you take a sip of your water, you tought it was cold but then it was hot.
Of course, I understand that maybe the studio is too small to pay for it and it may not be worth the trouble for them. I hope at least voices can be muted.
