How to deal with asteroid belts

My group ran into an asteroid belt for the first time last night and we basically instantly died. There are just so many asteroids and the ship's turning circle seemed like it was too big. What's the best way to get through them?

Some of them are really tough, for sure! One method is going all the way around them since they don't extend infinitely, but you can also learn to judge when there are spaces wide enough for your ship to go through. Having the shield upgrade is also very helpful, as it means you can take a hit from a small asteroid without getting wrecked.

Thanks! Hopefully next time we'll be able to go the long way around. We're fairly new and we're still at the point where we struggle to have enough money for upgrades and stuff and I've never seen a shield.
