How do I not be players 1 AND 2?

Just got the game recently, and am slowly getting the hang of it. The issue I'm having, that keeps me from moving forward within it, is that shortly after embarking, I come in again as player 2 and I can't figure out how to disconnect the extra. They move in unison, they act in unison (which is handy when I'm steering the ship AND expanding the radar at the same time; is that why that happens?), and each will try to do the same thing, regardless of how inappropriate the action might be, like both grabbing food.

Does anyone else have this problem, is it really a screwball feature (I think not), and how bad an issue will it become when I try to online multiplayer with it?

Aha, never mind, found it: I had "Enable Steam Control" turned on. The game already supports my controller of choice, so it was like a second me joining it in. Disabing Steam Control and letting the game handle the controller stuff fixed the problem.
