Syberia - The World Before

Syberia - The World Before

What happens next?
Hey guys, this is a topic containing spoilers for those who finished the game to discuss the story and speculations for the furture of the series.

Personally the game left me surprised as I was fully expecting Kate to go back to New York. I think the nostalgic atmosphere of The World Before created the perfect opportunity to conclude the story of Kate but maybe I'm interpreting it wrong and the symbolic jumping on a train is in fact not a gateway to the next chapter of Syberia but a conclusion in which the East becomes Kate's new home rather than the West.

What do you think? Were you satisfied with the ending? Do you think there are more adventures to come?

Benoit Sokal died, this was his last game. I would prefer Syberia to end here, because I cannot imagine anyone else doing such an amazing job as he did.

The ending was good, but I thought it would conclude the saga.

The moment at the mountain when Oscar called out Kate for basically being an adrenaline junkie (or trying to escape from reality) felt like really like the narrative core of the game. A bunch of times Kate asks herself why is she going around searching for a random woman in a picture, why it's so important that SHE finds the bodies NOW risking her life when she could just wait to tomorrow.

Hell, when Dana pretty much said that she isn't part the family and she felt nothing looking at her biological daughter was the nail in the coffin I thought, but then they tacked on the scene with Kate and the piano, and it felt forced, specially since Kate never really cared about piano, abandoned playing and just called it a teen hobby. Didn't seem like a really strong connection there. I thought Dana would just have left the music box in the house and leave calmly, but at the end the music box was from the Zimmers that were pretty much glossed over the whole game.

I thought that jumping on the train was just sequel bait, like the ending of 1 and 3, "oh Kate always chasing some dream", but at the end of the day she's chasing for someone that pretty much left her alone and was chasing HER dream (like Hans did before). It feels more like running away from reality, than actually chasing a dream. I was really hoping for her to miss the train, or actually be confronted by flashbacks of her questioning why she was doing the things she was doing, but no, she ends up in the train again.

Though I was kinda mad that we never got an Olivia payoff. she was your friend since childhood and took her boyfriend/husband, and just acts ♥♥♥♥♥♥ all the time. I agree that Kate has nothing left in NY for her anymore, she wasn't happy with her life, but just running around chasing ghosts isn't really much better. So there was that whole narrative aspect left open if the game just ended in the train back home.
Before playing the game, I was a little skeptical about a potential sequel after The World Before knowing that Benoit Sokal is no longer with us. After playing it, I really want it now. This game is a fresh start for the franchise. It pays tribute to previous games with some references, even the ending with Kate chasing the train and the last frame with the snowy mountains, what a beautiful way to end the game.
If you have the artbook, at the beggining there is an introduction. It says that the team will be responsible of the Syberia license in Sokal's absence so from this I understand that the franchise is not dead and it may continue. Now it depends of how well the game will do but I think it did fantastic, giving a punch to all the haters, especially those who criticized the game without even playing it.
As I said before, this game is something fresh, a new start for the series. With a good writer, it can have a really cool sequel. Lucas Lagravette must be the writing the next game. He worked along Benoit Sokal on Syberia 3 and The World Before.
Honestly, I keep my fingers crossed for the next game.
P.S This game looks stunning with this updated engine. Syberia 1 and 2 would look amazing with this engine. Wondering if they would remake them. Don't get me wrong, the games are perfect as they are but getting a BIG UPDATE to look like this... man, it would be sick. Valadilene, Barrockstadt, the land of Syberia, the winter wilderness... BREATHTAKING
As I said on a youtube comment :

I think that the ending is an "open" ending. And I wouldn't be mad at all, if this marks the end of Kate Walker's journey.

When you read and watch interviews, but also do play other's Benoit Sokal games, you do understand that besides anything, he is a dreamer and does think of the "impossible" and "what if". This is why the "ending" of this game, is so abrupt and might surprise some of you.

Also, I did saw that.. if you do play the game in english or any other languages than french, the meaning of the sentences are a bit different..

The reality of all of it, is that Kate doesn't feel free. Travelling around the world and discovering things is what makes her "alive" (which is funny, because the woman voicing Kate on the french version is the one that did Lara Croft.. and they do share the same goal, at least on the last Tomb Raider games).

So, if if they ever decide to end Syberia this way.. it would also follow the ideology that Benoit Sokal always did had. Not about the "destination" but the "journey". Because that is what life is all about : travelling.

If they do continue, then great :)!

That's the thing tho. If she ever came back to N-Y, she does have nothing. Only memories. Olivia is with Dan now. Kate's mom is dead and it does feel like she almost "lived" a lie.

She haves Oscar, and a new friends : Ludwing. There is also the "what if" concerning Dana. Is she doing well? Is she alive? Is she happy?

I think that, all Syberia games do talk about defying all odds and going againt's what others do expect of you, but more WHAT you want for yourself.

Kates does say it a few times during the game, that "she should do what others want her to do". But at the end of the day, she isn't happy. Travelling and going always further is what keeps her on "track", which is pretty metaphoric since a train does always run on theirs track.

Also, I do wanna point out that we do know little to nothing of Kate on the first episodes..

The end of this game could make some great plot for the next game :

Now Kate is going to face the consequencies of her actions. She did say that she was coming back, police is going to wait for her at the airport. What is going to happen next?

Is the police going to go after her?
What about Olivia? She could be a playable character on the next game looking for Kate.

Also, the "Gorun" village is on Asia. There is a ton of "myth" to explore. So many things that could be shown and visited.

i actually liked the part with the piano, kate and roze, doesn't matter that it was just a hobby for her, it was used to show that somewhere there is a part of Dana and Leon that still lives on, we see it with her adventurous spirit and dana saw it in her playing the hymn, on the idea of a sequel i wouldn't wonder that most of it is already written by sokal before he died, he seems like someone who writes the whole story not just the individual parts one at a time, all the rest is dialogue and design.
I don't believe the franchise should end here if the author wished it to continue and I'm pretty sure that Benoit Sokal would've left at least a rough script of the future events. It looks like they're setting up for at least two instalments taking place on that train like in Syberia 1 & 2. Who knows, maybe even Oscar will get to drive it again at some point as the train looks suspiciously similar to the old one. I agree that there is so much potential for interesting loctions and adventures. I"m hoping that next games won't focus solely on Gorun tribes but allow for exploring some Asian cities with a Syberian spin on architecture & design. Personally chapters with Yukols don't belong to my favourite but I was always excited to explore places like Valadilene, Romansburg, Valsembor and most recenttly, Vaghen.

I think that the possible plot for the next game or last two games could be this :

Syberia 5 :

Kates travels all the road back to the Gorun's tribe village. The Gorun's tribe village being in Asia, there is a long road ahead.

In between there could be some adventures and new places, that maybe Dana herself influenced with her music such as Hans with her automatons.

Syberia 5 could end with Kate arriving at the Gorun's Village, with Oscar and Ludwing.

Then on Syberia 6 it could be :

Arriving at the Gorun's village, there could be the Gorun's being very hostile to Ludwing since he left with Leon and Dana before (or maybe they kept good relationships?), and kate could try to make it work to enter the Gorun's Village.

Entering Gorun's village, Kates meets with Dana who is baffled seeing Kates ressemblance.

Kate introduces herself and does explain everything she had to do and sacrifice to meet her (from the start in Valadilenne and the rest of her journey). Then after all of this, Dana starts explaining what happened to her after she left N-Y.

Then we do have a very long flashback, were we play and see Dana travelling to the Gorun's Village and meeting one last time with Junta (very odd that Junta as an old spy agent, she didn't kept in touch with Dana, or didn't knew were she went), and maybe some stuff that happened with the Gorun's village (such as people trying to destroy the village or something).

After that, there could be some kinds of travelling there and there around the Gorun's Village, where Dana could explains that she is old and have one last wish => Doing a final Concert in New-York and play the Vaghen's Song (heck, she's a musician and loves playing piano !!!).

They could eventually go back to Valadilenne's factory one last time, to create a new body for Oscar, that could eventually join on the concert with Dana, to play the violin.

After some times.. like a few months, they go back to New-York.

Agreeing to go back to N-Y could save the charges pressed against Kate, since Dana is from her familly and is famous and have contacts (that could lead to an huge scandal is she ever goes to prison), but also because Kate's found out Dana after such a long time. Kate could be seen as a sort of "hero" or something.. And could be free.

While being on New-York and Dana preparing her last concert, Kate's meets one last time with Dan and Olivia to confront them, since if I recall well, Olivia ended up in a relationship with Dan.

There could be an urge argument between them, Olivia saying that Kate changed her mind at last minute and abandonned all of them.. Dan telling to Kate that she changed and isn't the same.

And it could end up with Kate finally standing up and maybe slapping one of them (they do deserve it both).

Kate's arrives late at the concert but just in time, when Dana does play the Vaghen's song.
Kate hears the song and she recall all of her adventures with Oscar and on the train.. She start crying and somewhat knows what to do next.

After the concert, people are mesmerized by Dana's Last Concert and specially Oscar, and the interest for Hans Voralberg automatons. The old factory could be converted in a sort of Museum, but still working were they do produce automatons like the old ways, transforming Valadilenne into a new Vaghen's.

Dana told's Kate that she is happy that she did her last concert, But sadly that she is way too old and tired to go back and travel to the Garun's Village. That she is ready to stay in New-York.. and does ask Kate about what she is planning to do, and she shows a big smile.

In a last scene, we do see Kate jumping again in a train, all happy, going to an unknown place, along with Oscar.

And that could be the end of Syberia :)
I think the sequel/sequels will still have connections with Hans and the automatons somehow. I mean, the train is so similar with the train from 1 and 2 so high chances of being a clockwork train, that means that Hans may have travelled to Baltayar as well. Maybe somehow he met Dana along the way. We all know Hans' passions for all the crazy ideas, locations and so on

As FORTUNE_COOCHIE said, by going to search for Dana, we may find people, events that were influenced by her, a new Hans kind of adventure xD but including automatons. Automatons playing music, I dunno.

The ending of TWB is very open it could go anyway. Maybe we will get to explore the Gorun village in the next game. In the artbook there is a sketch of a Gorun cave with some weapons which was not included in TWB. Maybe it will be used in the next game.

Whatever Microids choose how to continue the story, they should focus on a great story and good gameplay mechanics. Look, Syberia 3, I liked it but it lacked the magic of the other games. The characters were not so well written, that story of Kate being chased out of nowhere by Olga Efimova and the colonel, the gameplay was kinda weird. As I said, I liked it but it dragged the series down. It was made in a rush. They should take all the time they need.

Someone said Benoit Sokal may have left some ideas for an ending/how the series should continue, I agree. I mean, surely mr Sokal was aware of the gravity of his illness. He must have left something behind, like how he imagined all would end.
