You won't believe, I was a 18 year old college guy when I played the first game, and now I'm a 37 year old guy, but a complete ending still eludes us, God and Devs only know why.
The story may never actuallyend. If Kate decided to keep traveling, then the story would end when she changed her mind or got too old to travel. Realistically, the story will end when there is no more demand for Syberia games, but I hope we get at least a few more.
I'm hoping for a new game and I hope it doesn't start in a prison, hospital, etc.
I think Kate gave up too quickly in this part. Why didn't she take care of her grandfather's funeral, why didn't she even stay to go to it? Look like she hadn't even noticed that it was her grandfather. I think this funeral would be accompanied by publicity, so she would have the opportunity to meet people who might know more, meet her extended family, and even meet the missing Dana.
Which may have happened, but after her decision to leave...
I thought, seeing how Sokal passed away, they might have put a nice bow on it but they didn't. Technically they can allow The World Before to be the last one and never make another game and still be respectful to Sokal and the character. They don't have to show us those adventures, just end it in a "there will always be more things to discover in life" message and let the series conclude that way.
Alternatively they missed the chance to unambiguously end it because of Sokal's death and the themes of the game revolving around grief, age, disease, mortality, and karmic comeuppance for what she's done and had nothing go wrong for her (for the most part). Obviously didn't come to pass.
I mean seriously, Kate has done some pretty sketchy stuff to people and some extremely irresponsible things and she has for the most part gotten away scotfree. I get that in the adventure game protag scale she rates relatively low in the "jerk" category, but still.
I still really liked the game, it's definitely better than Syberia 3, but just missed opportunities in a lot of ways.
1. Devs can continue the chain of games, by just giving Benoit Sokal credit for being the creator of "Original Idea". And this would mean, we'll have more games.
Devs are certainly not dependant on the idea of Sokal's ending, or they might just have access to it.
2. If she just had to meet Roze and end it there, it would've happened it here only.
3. Devs certainly know the game has a substantial fan following now. It only makes sense to milk it.
4. Syberia 1 ended similarly- a train to somewhere. Syberia 2 ended peacefully.
Syberia 3 ended with her being arrested IIRC, again an incomplete end.
And then this...
I'm sure there will be a sequel. Everything points out so.
1. A "decent ending" would have to be properly defined first, and the point of view would have to be considered. Developers points of view don't necessarily match yours.
An open ending leaves room for easy continuation of a story, and it's obviously a better ending ("a decent ending") from the developer's perspective, and your understanding of "a decent ending" is actually "a closed ending."
This "closed ending" type often collides with a capitalistic way of thinking (if the game proves popular, we'll be able to 'milk' the players longer) as well as a real-life perspective...
2. The answer depends on whether you realize and properly understand points 1 and 3.
3. The question "How can the story not have an ending now when Benoit Sokal passed?" shows that you didn't understand point 1 and have no obvious answer on point 3, and that answers your point 2.
3.1: Benoit Sokal and the story continuation are not directly related. It might have been his story idea, but he didn't make the game all alone; there was a team behind him that made the game out of that story, and it wouldn't be hard to find another and probably even better storywriter who could easily write the continuation.
3.2.1: The story will end when nobody wants to buy another game, when the studio gets closed, or when they get bored or find another, more promising project.
3.2.2: The "ultimate and definitive story ending," or as you call it, "a decent ending," is a sort of "The Life and Death of Noble Sam" story...
Imagine I were writing "The Life and Death of Noble Sam."
What is our life anyway? Just the accumulation of single events. Combining the single events would create the episodes, and "a decent ending," as you understand it, would be when a Noble SAM finally passes. As long as Noble Sam is still alive, there won't be "a decent ending" to a story, but only one or more "indecent endings"—"a decent ending" for each single episode in "The Life and Death of Noble Sam" saga.
I hope that you can now better understand that and why Syberia has already had more than just four "decent endings" (in four Syberia parts) and that, for "a decent ending," you only need to stop playing at the end of each episode of the "The Life and Death of Kate Walker" saga and before the next episode in her life begins.
And I'll admit, I was expecting a Kate and Roze reunion, but now its not know when we'll see it, if at all.
In my opinion, Syberia 2 did have that beautiful, conclusive ending, and it is possible to continue a game after a decent ending, but like you said, devs need not necessarily agree to my idea.
Thanks for your response. I guess I'll mark your reply as the answer, its actually on a valid point.
