Gear percentages do...what?

Really beginning to make headway in the game, and as I use different gear I sometimes get rewarded with increased % points for them. Lovely. Does this mean anything, and if so, what? Or is it just how much you've used a thing and there is no bonus to 100%? Cheers

If you have an item at 100%, you get some EXP once

This is a thing that has not been discussed much on these forums, but is definitely a mystery to players, I think.

At this moment it doesn't seem as if having 100 percented a lure gives you more chance of attracting or hooking a nice fish.

Like many other things in the game, I thought these item mastery percentages were placeholders for game mechanics to be added later, but know I'm not so sure.

A dev could probably enlighten us if they deigned to step out of Discord for a second and look over Steam.

Based on the answer I got from the official discord members, mastering the gear gives you more experience and money when catching fish with that gear equipped.
