Don't let it bother you too much. You can let lures sink, but they rise pretty fast and unless it's a really deep lake fish seem to notice lures from most of the water column.
The only fish it's a problem for are Lake Trout since they spawn so deep. Even if you let a lure sink down to the bottom it ends up directly underneath the boat since you can't let line out. Then when you reel in the lure instantly rises out of Lake Trout zone.
