Once you send a friend request using there name/code it might say user not found but it will show as an incoming friend request if your friend gives it a few mins and checked pending friend requests.
You both also have to have multiplayer matchmaking turned on in the options tab. Check Apex again after a few more minutes and it will show your friend as online and you will be able to click on his/her name and click join game.
Again this is slow at syncing it will show that you have joined game but cannot see your friend give this 5 mins and you both should see each other in game.
Hope you have a good fishing trip. O7
