Bad frame rate on the 4090
I upgraded from a 3080 Ti to a 4090. Of course this game always performed perfectly on the 3080 Ti. But on the 4090 it suddenly has terrible frame rate, dropping to ~60fps or so. And sometimes it feels like dropping to ~30fps or so.

This behavior is somewhat random. I've found that if I open the SteamVR menu and repeatedly change resolutions, sometimes the frame time will suddenly become normal (~3ms). At that point I can play the game with my friends as long as I avoid clicking the SteamVR button again. If I open the SteamVR menu, it will most likely go back to the bad frame rate. Each time it gets kicked this way, there's like a 95% chance it will be in the bad state, and a 5% chance it will become happy.

I'm using a Pimax 8KX and thought this could be associated with having also moved to Large FOV where I was previously using Normal FOV. So I tried going back to Normal FOV and the frame rate wasn't as bad, but the same effect is present.

Setting the rendering resolution lower does not meaningfully improve frame times. It acts like there's something just spinning eating up GPU at a constant rate which is not associated with what it's actually rendering.

I'm not seeing this kind of effect with any of my other games. There is something about Walkabout Mini Golf specifically that the 4090 (or possibly the nVidia driver update to support it) is choking on.

Anyone else with a 4090 play this game? Also experiencing this issue or no?

Definitely not the 4090.. I have a 4090 and the game runs just like it did with my 2080. The biggest problem is Steam VR..
I upgraded from a 3080ti to a 4090 and performance became terrible. But it wasn't just limited to this game but all games would be ultra fast, micro stutter, ultra fast, micro stutter. It is just allot more noticeable in VR. I sent the card back on RMA and haven't tried the replacement yet but I fear there is a driver problem with the 4090. Windows was also unstable for me.
4090 + 5800x3d + vive pro 2 + latest nvidia drivers and it's 120 locked wired, 90 locked wireless which is really the only thing i play. it's butter, 1-2ms frame times. this cpu is dreamy for vive wireless adapter then the 4090 crushes the rendering.

also i can do 500% super sample in this, it's not very demanding and is a quest game after all also. it looks so damn crisp in the vp2 maxed out like this. i am coming from a 2080s + 3750x and it could get no where near this.

i don't really have any configuration done so can't help much. VR pre-rendered frames off in nvidia CP and no overlays running besides fpsvr.

hope you can figure it out. this card is a beast.

I recently went from a 3080 to a 4090 (paired with a 7700X) and it runs as great as before. Same as the rest of my VR games, many of which showed a remarkable improvement with the 4090. With the obvious exception of the Tower level in Boneworks. The CPU needed to run that smoothly hasn't been invented, yet.

THE PROBLEM IS STEAM VR! Steam VR is not needed for people with oculus headset. Make it so.

If the problem was steam vr why does steam vr work fine for every other gpu? Why does the 4090 work fine using steam vr in other games? Why does every problem relate to this particular game, on this particular gpu only?

Id really like to see you answer all 3 questions in a way that can possible support your stance. Go on.

I'm experiencing the same I upgraded to the 4090 and I only get 20 to 30 FPS and Re-projection is at 93% to 94% and choppy sound on walkabout mini golf before on 3090 it worked at 4K 120 FPS with 150% super sampling. 4090 is fine I have lots of games it works fine with but certain VR games have gone from buttery smooth to low fps choppy and some games will start a far as going through in game menus when I try to actually start a level the vr games crash all worked fine before.

And Eleven Table Tennis VR has a weird issue were I could run it at full graphics before at 120 fps 4k with 3090 but on 4090 it goes down to 20 or 30 but if i put it on low graphics I get the 120 fps back but the graphics haven't actually lowered which is nice but still a weird bug just cause I upgraded to a 4090 unfortunately that's the only game I could fix just lowering the graphics even though the graphics didn't actually lower.

I searched around for solutions and found a partial one the problem seems to be how steam interacts with the 4090 and some other cards on certain computers not quite sure what triggers it on some peoples cards and not others when they have the same cards. I found a guy who had the problem of steam randomising the render resolution rates so you think its on 100% when its actually several times that hence the 20 30 frame when you should be getting 120 so you reduce render resolution to the minimum 20% and it goes normal 4k instead of several times that even though all your stats say its on the resolution its on when its not.

So by reduction the render resolution to 20% I managed to get walk about mini golf go back up to 120 FPS and the graphics were obviously running at 4k which is great other than fact that it should just work normally with out having to do that. Unfortunately even though it worked for all the other games that were having problems the results were mixed raw data went from not even starting to allowing me to play at full 4k graphics but only at 60 frames and a 3090 can run that game at a full 120 FPS 4k with 150 Super Sampling with ease but hey at least Its usable now I can only assume that the render resolution was so randomised so high that even reducing it to 20% it was probably around 8k hence the 4090 could only do 60 FPS at best.

Zaccaria pinball a game i have all the tables for which costs a lot of money would not start when I got my 4090 pre lowering render rate before you start the game in steam vr setting custom render rate on per games bases allowed me to get the game starting again and running at 120 FPS however on this game unlike the other game lowering it to 20% actually lowered it to 20% and not to normal 4k like the other game end result I can now play pinball again in vr however I can see all the jaggy graphics.

Steam really needs to fix this issue with the render resolution randomising on some peoples computers It can either be fixed from steams side fixing all the games at once or developers side since many vr game don't have these issues with the 4090 and some other cards on certain configurations not sure its certain software + 4090 or hardware + 4090 but someone need to find out whats triggering it.

This issue is also happening to people with lower level cards I was still able to play raw data at 60 FPS when the render resolution was so high that reducing it to the lowest setting 20% was still running at something like 8k which only a 4090 could handle any one with a lesser card would lose the ability to play their own game I have lots of vr games and I've only tested out several affected ones who knows how much of my collection I'll have to play a a lower level or if there are games with the resolution is so high even reducing it to 20% still leaves it so high that not even a 4090 could handle it. Any way hopefully a programmer sees this and solves the mystery.

Small update although lowering the render rate to 20% still lets me play walkabout mini golf at 120 fps i'm now getting extreme screen tearing in the entire upper 25% of my head set happened right after steam and the steam console updated.

Found the problem apparently nvidia changed something about the render pipe line which adversely affects Varjo Aero, vive pro2, and pimax 8k headsets. Its been affecting 30 and 40 series cards for the last 4 months Varjo Aero solved the problem in the first 3 days. Unfortunately pimax and vive have been at it for 4 months and it only seems to get worse and affects more people with every update.

Nvidia claims there unaware of the problem then claiming there communicating with the companies and then claiming no communication has taken place. I'm assuming vive and pimax need some info from nvidia on what changed so they can solve the problem efficiently.

People are having problems reporting the issue to pimax due to there forms making it difficult for non Chinese to sign up and make them aware of legitimate complaints and deliberately stemming the flow of them so the don't have to deal with to many at once at least thats what various users have been saying.

If you have a vive pro2 you can go to the right start bar and right click on the vive console icon and click report issue and tell them about the issue in detail. I'm not sure if that will help but mabey if enough people officially report the problem instead of complaining only of forms they might recognise its a significant issue and put more resources into solving the problem.

Like i said at the start Varjo Aero solved this in the first 3 day so it is solvable there are 2 partial fixes that helped some and not others right clicking on the vive console in steam going to betas and installing the public beta which is a few updates back the other is not using your extreme 120 fps setting in the vive console and lowering it to the 90 fps setting again that helped some not others and wait until the problem is fixed if it ever does its been 4 months plus.

I have a 4090/Quest 2/Virtual Desktop, and have had issues running at 120hz, no matter what resolution is used. The frame times are amazing, but it hitches a lot, especially when looking at grass in the practice area.

Smooth as butter at 90hz.

Playing on 6800XT. Sometimes the game chugs and I have to restart the entire steam client. seems to do the trick
