Inheritance? New Game+?

Could someone give me a in depth explanation for how both inheritance and new game+ functions in this game? The only information that I gathered so far is that eventually in a playthrough, there's an NPC that allows you to pass down item(s) (someone mentioned being able to eventually pass down 5 items in another discussion) and I know about the new origins for new game+ but that's all. Are the inheritances shared between game difficulties?

You start with 1 inheritance slot, after finishing a run you get another inheritance slot up to 5 max. At the start of the game, you will make a choice at the buddha statue ,if you pick the last option you will gain an additional inheritance slot for that run but it will not exceed the 5 slot cap. You can Inherit anything, any stack, a million coins, 10 stat boosters, whatever.
