Basically, its Pokemon.
Run around in the grass and encounter enemies. Then you beat them until they are almost dead and use the related items (forgot what they were called. Monsters and random mooks have different items. Can be obtained from quests or bought from some merchants)
These "companions" can then follow you around and help you fight. These guys can have "unique stats and attacks" which may or may not be helpful. For example, the early random archer has a single target "hidden weapon" longbow with ridiculous range and a move range of 1.
This is definitely useless late game when everyone gets access to attacks that hit entire groups for more damage but decently useful as poke turrets early game.
Remember that I tested this only on ONE early game mook. Late game mooks may have better moveset but I have too many party members to care about them. (at least until I found out I had to ditch all of them for underlevelled Feather Robe scum.)
I got Dog and Summer back. (way too late tbh)
Flaming Cloud requires you to fight two hard bosses in the desert.
Everyone else was either benched or dead to begin with. (Which also results in me letting Snowball stay at home)
