There are a few ways to go about making money (RDO).

First is the story missions, these will have varying degrees of difficulty based on your skill level. You can usually find them as highlighted yellow areas on your map. However, some cannot be started with out collecting letters, either from the post office or from your mailbox at camp, and then interacting with them (these will also be highlighted in yellow).

Secondly, there are stranger missions, these tend to be pretty straight forward gopher type jobs where you must take thing to place. These pay okay in the beginning. However, once you have the money I recommend this next option.

Hunting, once you have either a bow, improved bow, varmint rifle, bolt action, or elephant gun (having the appropriate tool to take down the appropriate animal is important if you don't want their star quality to diminish) is a good way to earn money and food (food being important as you need to eat to keep your weight up if you don't want to go down quickly. You can check your current weight in the player menu. You can cook food at any campfire.) You can then sell your game to any butcher. You can also sell your skins to Gus MacMillan if you have met him ( You can meet him by doing the introductory Naturalist role mission highlighted in yellow in the town of Strawberry in the Big Valley region). However, Gus will not buy your skinned carcasses. I do recommend skinning your carcasses as you will gain more profit from the various pieces you gain as well as rank XP, dead eye XP, and potentially honor. I also recommend saving some meat for yourself as it fills your cores better than store bought food. I recommend saving big game especially as you can combine it with mint, oregano, and thyme that you can find will exploring to make cooked big game that will reinforce your cores. This can be important in particularly difficult or drawn out fights.

There is also fishing if you have the appropriate rank and money to afford a fishing rod. You can also fish using guns and dynamite. However, fish caught without using a rod will significantly degrade in quality, thus loose potential value.

If you chose to fish and hunt, you will find the most success with either near bodies of water, especially ones that flow.

Next, there are telegrams, these are missions of various difficulty for various numbers of players. Each time you complete them they will give you a good amount of money and gold. They will also increase in difficulty. "A New Source of Employment" is where you will find the single player focused missions. You can access the telegrams either in the online menu or in your satchel. You may need to first collect them from a place that you can collect your mail from.

Then there are free roam events. These will give you gold and money depending on your performance and are varying degrees of difficulty. I highly recommend participating in 'wild life photography' or any of the fishing related ones.

Finally, there are roles. You will need to seek out the various people whole will allow you to buy into these roles to participate in them. To buy in you will need 10 gold. However, once you are able to, these are easily the best way to earn large amounts of money. Make sure to do your research before choosing one though.

I hope that this helps in some extent.

Semiraco's post gave a lot of really good info, so +1 from me about the recommendations.

Here's a copy & paste recommendation I made yesterday to someone who was also new.

The roles I recommend for new players are Trader and Moonshine. Those two make a lot of money this whole month with 2X bonus money and XP, and they are also partly passive and operate automatically in the background. So players can simultaneously do other things in the game to make gold, like playing Stranger missions.

But everyone new shouldn't be so much in a rush. Enjoy the process -- it's most of the fun😊

______

There is 2X bonus for money and XP this month, so any role that pays money is really nice to take advantage of. As far as gold, all roles and events that pay gold pay equal amounts; they pay based on time spent playing. Below is the chart. You'll make the most gold/time during 12 mins.

Gold payouts per time spent:

Under 2 minutes = 0.04 Gold
2-6 minutes = 0.08 Gold
6-10 minutes = 0.12 Gold
10-12 minutes = 0.24 Gold
12-15 minutes = 0.32 Gold
15-20 minutes = 0.36 Gold
20-25 minutes = 0.40 Gold
25-30 minutes = 0.44 Gold

So if you want to make more gold, missions from free roam are great, because they don't cost anything to start. Stuff like Blood Money justfaded recommended and Stranger missions.

Bounty Hunter makes a little more money and the same gold as the other missions, but it does cost gold to start. It does unlock ability for doing daily challenges that reward gold.

Regarding the bows, the Improved bow drains less stamina and can lock onto targets using Paint it Black from further away, after leveling up the bow from usage.

I recommend playing bows with the ability cars "Paint it Black" and "Live for the Fight."
Paint it Back gives auto aim, and the other card automatically refills your auto aim ability called "Deadeye."
They go well together for those who like to ride around and hunt.

If you're on PC and run into others using cheat to disrupt your game, you can also play in a private lobby. The video below from Jared does a good job showing how. It's great if you want to explore and learn everything about the game. Have fun 😊

Hey, I was unaware of that new text guide by Kaya'sia. Thanks for sharing it CC. :)

Also, yes, trying to make activities take 12-13 minutes is the best way to maximize the amount money/gold/XP earned. I usually set a timer on my phone or Google and would make sure not to complete the task until after the timer went off.

lol, this means sometimes you’ll be standing around doing nothing while you wait. You can spend this time shooting stray bad guys who are chasing you (to lvl-up), harvesting herbs and berries, walking around town holding your horses reins to lvl-up your horse bonding level, etc.

Literally, an MMO.

This is why I generally don't play said genre, as it's almost always an insulting time sink -- a game design model that should have legislation attached to it, as in Korea -- and when everything is so "kosher" in pricing on top of that, the compounding effect is too much for a self-respecting koala to bear.

What they should have done (putting their continuous "Scourge'ing" of how much zenny can be earnt), is given people a "V. I. P. ticket" for each character they make, which then provides them one, free purchase of most items -- so that they can, at least, fit themselves out to a reasonable degree, and feel more the part from the start. For me, someone who was reared in an era where game content was all reasonably gettable through gameplay (if not unlockable via cheat codes), tying trifling content behind copious hours of grind, is the very definition of a disincentive to play a game. For in the end, it doesn't matter how nice a game looks -- and, granted, RDR2 is arguably the best looking and most detailed game out there -- if the framework beneath it is ill-conceived, it's all for naught... Indeed, likely why the game (the online component of it, that is) had such a seemingly, incongruously negative reception.

Off topic. Everyone should be able to express their opinion, but just pick the right place and make a different thread. I won't comment much on this and derail the original topic, other than to say: Life is a choice; if you don't like something, do something else.

😊 It's a well-made guide, in my opinion, and well-made stuff that's helpful deserve to be shared.

Yep, good points and smart to maximize time. I'm aware you don't like hunting/killing animals, but for those who enjoy that for the Trader role, besides doing the stuff Silhouette mentioned above, you can also hunt and store in your hunting wagon while waiting for the timer. It's being resourceful and getting paid to do things players usually don't, unless they figure it out...win/win 😊

Another tip on maximizing your money and XP is to look out for collector items scattered all over the map, like cards, jewelry, etc. You can see them glowing if you activate Eagle Eye. Those items can be sold for a decent amount of money later, when you have the Collector role. If your friends are playing with you, doing this treasure hunting is pretty fun.

For maximizing XP, a simple trick is to select "Free Aim" on the gamepad settings. This will give you extra XP for every kill you make, even if using a mouse/keyboard.

To make gold relatively easy, there are challenges you can reset and collect .40 gold, like killing certain amounts of animals, buying a number of items from the catalogue, etc.. Once you've done them, you can reset the challenge and collect .40 gold and repeat that 10 times per challenge, so 4 gold bars. There are dozens of those challenges you can do if you want more gold. You can find them in the menu. This is for other new players as well. Have fun.
