I have paid my money and I refuse to be cowed by these ne'er do wells.
I will not be changing my behaviour to accommodate these idiots.
To do so is to give in to them. The very thing they want!
What needs to happen is for RS to get their collective finger out and fix it!
And, of course, we all know that isn't going to happen.
RDO is the last online RS game I will be buying.
Which means that, in the end, the griefers have won.
My loss.

1) On PC, use a third Party method to create a private session for you and your friends. This Steam Thread shows you how (see first reply in thread).

Currently there is no officially supported way to create private sessions; players need to rely on 3rd party options like this. Thanks Rockstar. :/

2) Play the game on console.
The PC version of Red Dead Online has a horrible cheating problem. If you enjoy playing in public sessions with other players DO NOT BUY Red Dead Online for PC; you'll be happier playing the game on console where cheating is not a problem.

Also, side-note for new players: there is no text chat in this game. Be prepared to use a mic, and be warned that the vast majority of players do not use mics so you'll be speaking to a world of mutes...
...Thanks Rockstar. :(
Furthermore, I'd like to emphasize that encountering cheaters or hackers is not an everyday occurrence. Approximately 90% of the time I spend playing this game it is free from any hacking incidents. While those rare occurrences are quite psychological and can genuinely disturb your mindset, I usually choose to ignore the cheating issue and rely on this guide, as it doesn't seem to harm my character or fun in any significant way.
Just came from a co-op mission where a cheater hijacked our game and made everyone explode.
If I was being GENEROUS I’d say my PC experience of this game is maybe 60% cheater free. :/
When I join a new session or team-up with a random posse it’s not unusual to come across a cheater. :(
But I play during the evenings when the cheating’s at its worst.
However, for anyone who's worked retail, you know 95% of customers are totally fine, but all it takes is that miserable 5% to completely ruin your day.
Well, there's a higher frequency of cheaters in RDO than there is "bad customers" in retail, so your day gets ruined pretty regularly, lol.
You too! :D
It is a mod cause that has happen to me afew times.
Watching people attempt to shoot me while I'm in defensive mode is genuinely amusing. It proves to be highly effective.
However, I agree with you. Private Sessions kinda kill the Online/Multiplayer aspect of the game. @_@
Sadly, that means the only way to enjoy this game in public sessions is to play the game on console.
