Wow. So basically the exact opposite of the real world. Who would have guessed. Cheers for the answer, as I too wasn't sure what was going on with the chickens.
Can you screenshot how yours are setup?
Mine work "sometimes", other times the nearby nests will be ignored. So I probably need to move mine around.
Sure. They seem to need to have at least 2 or more nest spaces between the nests. Only 4 have eggs over their heads so 2 aren't used but I tossed them onto the 4 there to show the distance. A couple were sitting on the others before that.

There is an actual bug where they wont use the nest even if wanting to lay eggs(egg over their head). Even a dev answered in one of these threads that tossing a hen with an egg symbol near a nest should have it sit on the nest. They don't and I couldn't even break the nest that was being ignored till I broke the one next to it. I spread them all out and the hens all sat on the new nests. Something about them being to close makes the game not recognize their existence. Like I sad even I as a player couldn't interact because the game thought there was no nest till I broke the one it did recognize and spread them out.
I didn't know this one and I believe this was my problem. Everything else was right I just hadn't waited long enough. Thank you!
I had no idea about this! Mine are right next to each other with no spaces and I was having to throw my chickens onto them directly. I will be trying to move them apart now. Thank you!
