But that doesn't help their review score. Too many Devs don't understand that creating too much hype or false/incorrect expectations can kill their game. My guess is they focused on showing the combat because it is more attention grabbing, especially visually. But players will then expect the game to match what they saw, and get grouchy if it doesn't.
Unfortunately, yeah.

They really should have leaned into comparisons closer to Gamedec or Disco Elysium for more clarity.
I'm more than content at what I have here and it's exactly what I was hoping for - but after looking at the store page a second time it really does seem like they wanted to do the contemporary 'mainstream appeal' thing of showing combat over the roleplaying, which probably hurt them in the long run as a result. :/
Sorry, but no.
This is a bad game. Uninspired, badly designed, extremely linear and lacklustre in every aspect except the presentation. Yes, the devs are nice and didn't pretend that everyone not liking it was an idiot, but that doesn't magically make the game good.
This is barely a game. People who said that about Disco Elysium should play Broken Roads just to know how wrong they were.
Your character is a non-entity in this story.
The story is on rails there is barely any options to interact with it.
NPCs are laughably simple, but still acting in completely nonsensical ways to move the story along.
The """groundbreaking""" new morality system is a very simplistic gimmick which doesn't really do anything apart from locking down half the dialogue options for you.
There isn't enough dialogue to actually implement it in any case, and what is there is so basic that it could have worked the same without it.
To make it even worse, the way it's implemented doesn't even make sense.
It's also very short, very simplistic and despite this there is quite a lot of padding to its playtime with aimless running around for fetch quests.

^ It would be cool if people making these claims wouldn't all have hidden profiles so we could look at their playtime/achievements to see the validity of some of the points they are wanting to make.

No one so far who is touting the 'short game' argument even owns it, or is hidden for some reason. (And infact someone linked to Mortismal's Steam page in which he had 40+hrs)

I've had my eye on this one for a while.. little combat and short is what i want in an rpg. I'm so sick of 100 hour slogs. It's not that they are horrible, but i don't want to spend months playing every single game i pick up. A game that i can enjoy for a night or two and have a good little story is exactly the kind of thing i want more of, not less. Even 20 hours is to long in most cases for me. 3-7 is my sweet spot. This game moved up on my list for sure. I'll wait a few weeks and hope for a bug's patch and pick it up.

I have now five hours in the game, and I think I am probably done playing. (Not at the end).
If you don't believe me, well, that's up to you. However it seems extremely unlikely that some random internet trolls would write detailed descriptions about what they don't like in the game for random internet points when this game has already failed irrecoverably.
Also I left a very detailed description in the other topic about one of the game's most insanely low effort and badly handled "twists", but I guess I must have made that one up as well...

Edit:
You know what? Since I am venting, because I am angry about this game, here you go. Here is why the combat and the game length is the least of this game's problems.
This happens when you get to the second town in the game.
1.: Getting in, you meet the mayor, who wants you to do some election rigging for her.
2.: If you refuse, then the second you step out of her office you instantly get transported into a basement somewhere with your "crew" (they werent with you before), and threatened by the most famous evil gangleader in the wasteland. There is no transition, you are just there.
3.: Famous evilwoman threatens you since she is in cahoots with mayor, then you teleport back to mayor office (your crew goes missing again)
4.: Mayorwoman threatens you to now do her bidding or else. I said no again.
5.: The second you leave her office YOU ARE KIDNAPPED AGAIN AND SENT TO EVILGANGWOMAN AGAIN WITH YOUR CREW
6.: She should kill you but she doesn't, leaves a few goons for you to kill, then you instantly teleport back to town again where the election is now going.
7.: But not even that happens as randomly a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wizard attacks and the whole thing gets forgotten about.
8.: Like literally, you can never bring this up again, ever. You cannot tell anyone that the mayor is bffs with one of the raider gang leaders to anyone. No one cares.
9.: Because of 7., I don't think it even matters if you do her stupid election fraud side quest.

Yeah I just got off ~110+hr playthroughs of Infinite Wealth and FF7Rebirth, currently still working my way through P3R at 100+hrs, got about 50hrs clocked in Unicorn Overlord and counting so far, Eiyuden Chronicle comes out in a few weeks..

This Year is already absurd for RPGs and I can appreciate the bite sized things now and then myself too.

@Wondervice I appreciate the effort but I don't exactly want to look at direct spoilers either. Just waiting for the weekend before I can actually get a proper binge-play session in and I'll see if my opinion has changed any.

complaining that the skill tree/character sheet is not on [C] like... bro, what?
What exactly is wrong with complaining about that? When I hit I i want to see the inventory, when i hit M i want to see the map, when i hit C i want to see the character sheet, when i hit Space i want the game to pause (when it is pausable), when I hit esc i want it to close menues/open the pause menu... isn't that just a good standard? I'm always confused why some games break with it for seamingly no reason. (Being able to remap keys is great too, of course)

Because it's a crazy minor thing to give a bad review about? The skill tree/character sheet is on [T] which is not uncommon.
There's something like justified criticism and then there's this.

This really sounds more of a "I have no life and I must defend something with my time" problem than the game being good and US not seeing it.

I mean...even after several delays this came out. And look at it. Yeah its indie, and i'm full in support of little studios. However, most gamers, me included, are sick of games being released in broken state and "fixed" after the release. I don't know how many roadmaps i seen in all my years..and most of them failed horribly. Anthem, Overwatch, etc. If the game turns out to be a banger 1 year in the future...good. if not...well...no buy.

The developers of this underdog game are trying to put the blame on the players, when they could have just made a good game :evelyn2077:

Are you everyone? Just because you dislike the game that doesn't mean other won't like it. How can I personally be thinking how the game is based on your opinion? Everyone is different we all have things we can tolerate in games and some things we can't but that doesn't mean the game is bad. We all have different tastes and playstyles of games. So how do I trust negative reviews when I haven't played the game telling me not to buy it?

No where have they blamed or criticized the players complaining ; not at all, on the contrary.

Everyone, except you it seems, sees they are taking the criticism directly and accepting them.

You can think and like whatever you want. However if you don't care about anyone's opinion who says something you don't agree with without playing the game then I have no idea why you are reading anything anyone says about the game.
The game is bad, not achieving what it sets out to do, and certainly not delivering what it promised to deliver. Looks like the majority of people is in agreement about that.
I'm enjoying it

Where did I say I don't like other peoples opinions? I was asking if you are everyone because we are all different something you dislike someone else might like. I don't go around trying to change anyones mind not to buy a game. Let people themselves decide that its not your place to do that.
