What is your PC hardware? Do you meet the minimum requirements?
GTX 1070, win 10, 16GB RAM, i5-6600k
Today I think I was able to fix the issue. I closed all other apps and programs, made the game run in administrator, and set the priority of the quest 2 VR processes to "above average" in the task manager. I still had the settings on low, but will try to increase them next time I play. I was able to play for around 2 hours without any issues when before I could only play in the tutorial for less than 5 minutes before it just closed to the steam virtual home. Maybe it was also the tutorial area because I left it as soon as I could when I started the long session. I'll make another character later and see if that is the reason.
Ah good to hear you got it working, yeah the 1070 is right on the minimum requirements.
I started a new character with all of the same changed mentioned above. Sadly it encountered the same crashing out of nowhere issue in the tutorial. First at the training dummies, then again when Lyra speaks to you the first time just like before. I hung around after defeating the snake boss hologram, destroying the targets to grind exp and wait for the crash right after that point, but it never happened. So assuming that the issue was Lyra talking to you afterwards, I tried facing away from the hologram video of her talking and tried ignoring it and any others like it from that point. Surprisingly, that seemed to work. I was actually able to finish all of the tutorial, seeing the cutscene with the bad guy that I didn't know existed, and escaping the academy.
Additionally, apparently there WAS a main story I was missing out with on my first character as I had just been wandering around aimlessly with him. The NPC from the tutorial never appeared at the end of the city bridge to give me things to do, like go to the mine, which is pretty annoying for my first character who is now bugged, basically useless, and will need to be remade. I was also able to increase the graphics settings to medium and turn post-processing on. Once out of the tutorial area I have not had any crashes since.
TLDR: I think there might be something about the video holograms or certain parts of quest stages that make some people crash in the tutorial which bugs up their quest progression. I hope this helps the devs look into the issue or others with the same problem.
